The only thing that had been worrying me about this race was the deep water start. There was a very real possibility that I would be kicked in the face and then hit by the flailing arm of someone trying to fight their way through the swarm of swimmers only to resurface feeling slightly dazed and discover that there would be no mercy and be kicked again losing my goggles. This was not how I wanted to start my first triathlon of the season. As we lined up between the two buoys I feared that this was going to be my fate. The only way to avoid the worst of it would be to get a good start but, havi ..read more

This Saturday (28/1/23), I was pleased to see my winter training paying off when I ran my first sub 17 minute 5k at Exmouth parkrun. Having ran a 17:14 5k split at a 5mile race the previous Wednesday (which I finished in 11th place in a time of 28:32 making me the fastest under 17 runner by almost a minute) I decided it was time to have a shot at sub 17. Leading Cranbrook country park parkrun a few weeks previously The course at Exmouth is fast and flat however does commonly have strong crosswinds and, as was the case this weekend, sand on the course. My previous personal best at this event wa ..read more

Having completed the 2k swim at Exmoor three times in previous years I decided that in 2022 I would take on the 4k event. My initial goal was to finish in under an hour which I thought might be too ambitious given that previously I had been unable to finish the 2k swim in under 30 minutes but I decided to stick to it and see what happened. We arrived at the event early, over an hour before our 09:25 start time as we wanted to give ourselves p ..read more

A common question people ask when looking to complete a triathlon is how much training do I need to do. Sadly, there is no single correct answer as the amount of training required will vary from person to person and of course more challenging goals will require more training. In this post I will try and provide a guide that will help you work out how much training will be necessary to achieve your goal. Don’t do too much It is common for someone, especially someone who is just starting triathlon, to think that more training means better performance. This is not true. Too much training will lea ..read more
