In the late summer of 2023, a small group of American and British political strategists sat down for dinner at a restaurant in London’s Marylebone neighborhood. On the menu: French cuisine and political anxiety. The gathering included several key Labour Party officials and two outspoken American centrists, Matt Bennett and Josh Freed, both leaders of the think tank Third Way. Conversation quickly turned to Labour’s political messaging, which remained fuzzy even as the ruling Conservatives flailed in the polls. As good as things looked for Labour, there had been some unsettling political misses ..read more

LONDON — Michael Gove — a Cabinet veteran and key player in Britain’s Brexit campaign — will not stand as a Conservative MP in the upcoming general election, he announced Friday. In a letter posted on social media, the U.K. housing secretary — who has served under four prime ministers in a string of top government jobs since the Tories came to office in 2010 — confirmed he would not be seeking re-election to his Surrey Heath seat. “No-one in politics is a conscript,” Gove wrote. “We are volunteers who willingly choose our fate. And the chance to serve is wonderful. But there comes a moment whe ..read more

POLITICO

Activists behind a campaign calling for EU-wide abortion rights are urging people to vote against a far-right surge in the European Parliament. Campaigners will gather Friday evening in Hénin-Beaumont, South of Lille in France, where National Rally leader Jordan Bardella and former leader Marine Le Pen are set to host a party meeting. “Usually no one dares to come and tell them, ‘we don’t agree with you,'” said Alice Coffin, coordinator of the My Voice, My Choice campaign in France. “And this is what my My Voice, My Choice will be doing tonight. We’re having a counter meeting called ‘feminists ..read more

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said Friday his country was looking to redefine its membership in NATO to ensure the country cannot be involved in operations outside of the military alliance’s territory. “Now a new term has been invented to describe the Hungarian position in NATO, it is called non-participation. We are not a participant now,” Orbán said in an interview with Kossuth Radio, according to a report by Hungarian news portal Telex. “There is the term opt-out … If we were opt-outs, our participation in NATO’s military structure, our position, would change,” Orbán was quoted as s ..read more

Russia can’t resist testing the Baltic waters. Just a day after the the Kremlin’s defense ministry deleted a threat to redraw borders in the Baltic Sea earlier this week, Russian border guards removed more than 20 buoys on the Narva River — a waterway along the Estonian-Russian border. EU leaders condemned the move as an act of provocative behavior by Russia with its neighbors. “This border incident is part of a broader pattern of hybrid actions by Russia, including on its maritime and land borders in the Baltic Sea region,” the EU’s chief diplomat Josep Borrell said in a statement Friday. “Th ..read more

The International Court of Justice ruled Friday that Israel must immediately halt its offensive in Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. The court cited the “immediate risk” to Palestinians of a further Israeli military assault in the coastal enclave. Israel must “immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah governorate, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,” the court ruled. The ICJ also ordered Israel to open the Rafah border crossing with Egypt for the ..read more

How strong is the far right now that Alternative for Germany MEPs are out of ID?
POLITICO
by Paul Dallison, Hanne Cokelaere

The Alternative for Germany’s MEPs have been kicked out of the EU Parliament’s far-right Identity and Democracy group. So how does that change the electoral math? Before the AfD delegation was booted out — following a series of scandals mostly involving lead candidate Maximilian Krah — the ID group had 58 MEPs. POLITICO’s Poll of Polls predicts ID will jump to 85 in the European election of June 6-9 (with the AfD included). Right now, the AfD has nine MEPs and it’s projected to get 17 in the new Parliament (which will have 720 members as opposed to 705 now). Take the 17 AfD MEPs away and ..read more

Recognizing Palestinian state ‘not a gift to Hamas,’ EU’s top diplomat says
POLITICO
by Pierre Emmanuel Ngendakumana

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has a message: It’s about time Israel started accepting some criticism. “Recognizing the Palestinian state is not a gift to Hamas, quite the contrary. Reinforcing the Palestinian Authority is not reinforcing Hamas; quite the contrary. It’s aimed at giving greater strength to the part of Palestinian society which we recognize and with which we work,” he said, according to the Spanish daily newspaper El País. Borrell’s remarks follow moves by Ireland, Norway and Spain to officially recognize Palestine as a state from next week, which triggered fury in Israel ..read more
