The history of Koh Tao starts as an uninhabited island until the early 1940’s when it was turned into a political prison for prisoners from the Borawadesh uprising on Koh Tarutao. The prison was located in Mae Haad Bay and at its height housed just over one hundred prisoners and about fifteen wardens. Life wasn’t easy for the prisoners as food was scarce and malaria was rife. The best way to get to Koh Tao depends a little bit on where you are coming from, what your travel budget is, and how long it takes to get here. If you are coming from Bangkok and money is not a problem, I would recommend you fly to Koh Samui & then catch a ferry to Koh Tao, but if you are on a bit of a budget, take the night bus or train from Bangkok to Chumphon and then the ferry to Koh Tao.
