Hi, my 11 year old daughter is learning to swim; and she has progressed by a few levels now. We understand that she takes swimming seriously. was thinking of getting her a watch that she can wear when swimming, for her birthday. What are some of the watches we can get her? not something very expensive - what should we search for when looking for one in Amazon for example? " Water proof"/ " swim friendly"? Thank you ..read more

Butterfly Stroke Training

I was a bit pee,d off because I wrote about this yesterday but it got lost in the ether. Anyhow, yesterday I was so excited to complete a 30m lap non stop butterfly with breathing! Two points from sprinter help; firstly to always claw the water back immediately upon hand entry and secondly to avoid undulation and stay at the water surface. This enables me to achieve the Swim England for Kids level 6 which puts me at being equivalent to a 7 year old! It has taken me quite a while to ..read more

Lost Your Catch? Coach Mandy

I am enjoying Coach Mandy,s youtube videos on swim techniques and this particular one took my interest. https://youtu.be/NlASMiee6XM As with any drill it,s easy to do a few metres and think you have mastered it but that is most unlikely. After only a total of 3km of this I am finding that I need a more accurate kick since the catch is harder to locate with a closed fist. My body balance is poor too unlike coach Mandy. I think it is a very useful drill. Conversely, a report on three ..read more

Sidestroke Variations

This seems to be easy to do but gets some criticisms from the viewers: https://youtu.be/YK1QRGFPXs8 I am new to this topic and haven,t yet tried it. The head is always breathing out of the water and all the thrust comes from the legs. I saw other methods that had more arm streamlining but anything with glide is always going to be slow compared to the crawl. There seems to be different ways of doing sidestroke and any new ideas for me will help me swim in the busy socially close ..read more

Doggy Paddle Variations

Since I need to thoroughly master the basics I am experimenting with doggy paddle. This seems to be the basic version: https://youtu.be/_uOd5Jr0v-0 Next: This is a fine example of long arm doggy paddle (after some talking about it): https://youtu.be/qZhCL2XsQNI Finally here is Paul Newsome,s method (after a little bit of sculling).  I,m not sure this is doggy paddle having never seen a dog do this version.   It is more like finger tip drag drill but using the whole hand to drag ..read more

Katy Ledecky Kickbeat Variations

This video of K.L is interesting because it shows her doing what is really just a 1 beat kick at a certain stage in her longish pool swim. At other points in the race she uses 4 beat and 6 beat kicking. Going back to the 1 beat action, she is using this to kick down hard on the left leg whilst spearing in with the right arm and always breathing to the right. This is a loping style. The right leg just remains streamlined and immobile. https://youtu.be/gfnCcFQaWdU I have been trying ..read more
