Episode 209 – Creating meaningful content
The Mediocre Alaskan

In this solo episode I talk about some of the difficult aspects of podcasting such as lining up guests and some of the most important things to keep in mind, like doing research and finding unique angles so you’re not having a person tell the same story they did last week on a podcast (unless it truly is incredible). Anytime you are creating anything, it comes down to audience and purpose. What are you creating, who are you creating for, and why ..read more

Column: No king for me
The Mediocre Alaskan

Sometimes the end leaves no doubt, even when the end features no fish. It’s not a numbers or time thing. It’s a feeling. As a man forced me to reel up as his tail-hooked king salmon ran downriver into the small little edge I was fishing (away from the chaos upriver), I inched closer to that point. I turned and watched him as he guided the tired fish to shore, kicked some water on it, then took out his cellphone. I returned to my casting. When I booked a guide for the first day of my honeymoon with my wife, I was curious as to why the guide steered us toward the Kenai River for trout, even tho ..read more

Column: One good fish

I like three. Three types. Three colors or three sizes. That provides enough variety I feel like I can handle whatever situation I might encounter. But my rule of three tends to be when I have figured something out. The less I know, the more I wanted to be prepared, but the more overwhelmed I become. In this case, I have 16. Some with two colors, but most with one, so the numbers are off. It’s not that I am obsessive or meticulous, but those neat, tidy multiples of three tend to be the aim and reflect my level of confidence. Many anglers knew exactly what I meant by the ninth word of this col ..read more

Column: Popping the bubble
The Mediocre Alaskan
by The Mediocre Alaskan

There are lots of bubbles. Some involve trapped air, but most are metaphorical. Sports leagues have had bubbles. Communities have them. Close-talkers don’t understand them. Sometimes you escape all of the bubbles, or enter a protective bubble. I’m not sure which analogy is the most fitting. Is it that a weekend charging into inlets squeezed between towering monolithic cliffs is escaping the chaotic, shallow bubble of the modern life? Or is that same experience more like entering a protective bubble that shuts out all the inconsequential garbage of daily life? See full column HERE ..read more

Episode 202 – Brown bear down
The Mediocre Alaskan
by The Mediocre Alaskan

“If you know, you know” is a pretty lame, overused expression, but it does encapsulate the feelings during a hunt. Writers and podcasters always try to put words to experiences, and we always fail. But we can connect people to their own memories and maybe in that light, the storytelling is successful. In this solo episode, I fumble to find words to recount the 26-hour brown bear hunt I was invited on over the weekend which culminated with me taking my first brown bear ..read more
