Our Take on Budget 2023

On March 28th, the 2023 Federal Budget was announced. Just like Budget 2022, women-owned businesses did not get a mention. In fact, the only businesses mentioned in the Budget were those in the cleantech sector, which includes manufacturing, technology, construction, skilled trades, and other male-dominated industries. There is no doubt that Canada needs to transition to clean energy – but there is more than one way to balance a budget. The Canadian Women’s Chamber of Commerce (CanWCC) advocates on behalf of the woman-identified and non-binary business owner community for economic equity. Alth ..read more

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? My name is Corrine Boudreau. I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I’ve been a business lawyer for more than 20 years now. I’m an entrepreneur and a lawyer.  One of my passions is helping Canadian business owners, particularly women and non-binary folks, figure out how to create a legal foundation for their business. I’ve figured out different ways of doing that over the years, but that’s really what drives me. Why did you decide to pursue your business? Yeah, well, I think like many people in the legal profession, once you graduate, you go look for ..read more

Welcome, Yvonne, it’s a pleasure to have you here. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Absolutely. Well, I am a different kind of photographer, I’ve chosen to be a boutique photographer. I specialize in portraits of the things, the places and the people that you love the most. Anything that brings you joy, that’s what I photograph. From that I create large wall art for you to have in your room to set the tone for your entire day. We design how and where that’s going to look on your walls, what you want the color scheme to be. And then we bring it together when we do our shoot. Can I a ..read more

Can you please tell us about you? My name is Janice Bartley, and I am the founder and executive director of Foodpreneur Lab, which was created out of frustration in the food ecosystem, where I noticed that while opportunities existed, those opportunities weren’t necessarily trickling down to the BIPOC community.  I was provoked into purpose, and I took charge of that and tried to change the narrative and landscape within that space. Can you tell us more about the barriers you experienced? The ethnic food market (which I prefer to refer to as a cultural food market) abounds with opportunit ..read more

Can you please tell us a bit about yourself? My name is Julie Lawrence. I’m based out of Halifax. I have a background in marketing and communications, and then transitioned from that realm into journalism. So I’m kind of a mixed bag – I call myself a jewels of all trades.  I’m also the founder and CEO of a digital magazine called Defy, which is a feminist magazine for professional women that tackles misogyny in the workplace. It validates some of the collective anger that I think we all feel, and then gives tips from experts on how to conquer that. Can you tell us one achievement you’re v ..read more

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Hi world! I’m Althea Branton, pronouns she/her. I am the founder and skincare designer of Althea Branton. (My name kind of sounds like a designer handbag, let’s be real.) We’re launching a gender fluid skincare line for black and brown bodies in 2023. Can you tell us an achievement that you’re very proud of? I’m proud to say that all the funds I needed to launch this line, I raised them on my own. Yes, yes, it sounds really individualistic. But given through in the last couple of years, I’m really really, genuinely grateful that I was able to gather ..read more

Jennifer, please tell us a bit about yourself  I’m the managing director of Process Design Consultants, Inc, which is a training, development and coaching organization based in Toronto. I help organizations and individuals with critical thinking, change management, and people development.  I have a bit of a unique spin – I have a trauma informed lens. Even though I have all of the business critical thinking methodology behind me, I find that often addressing that trauma up front helps get the brain in a position where it can start making some really great business decisions.  Ca ..read more

And of course, above all, I’m an entrepreneur. I’ve been in business since 2013.  What is an achievement that you’re very proud of in your life?  My business is one just starting it, but also staying with it for so long ..read more

Tell us a little about yourself I am a professional photographer based in Toronto, and I’ve been in business for over 25 years now.  I started off in commercial photography, but over those 25 plus years I have ended up mostly photographing people for business branding and marketing communications purposes. So that could be anything from authors to executives to staff, anyone who needs to have marketing imagery. That’s an interesting progression through your career. It was partly due to changes within our industry. You know, when I started, we shot using film, and it was an entirely differ ..read more
