The Spurs boast two picks in the top eight of this year’s forthcoming NBA draft, Nos. 4 and 8. A fresh mock draft from Nick Moyle of The San Antonio Express-News sees San Antonio selecting Kentucky combo guard Reed Sheppard and Tennessee swingman Dalton Knecht. Sheppard, Moyle contends, could help as a passer and shooter, though he may have limitations as a lead ball handler at the pro level. Moyle approves of Knecht’s versatile scoring acumen, and thinks he’ll compliment Rookie of the Year center Victor Wembanyama and power forward Jeremy Sochan offensively, while cautioning he may struggle d ..read more

The Sportsmanship Award has been presented annually since ’95/96 and “honors a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court.” According to the NBA, each team nominated one of its players. Trae Young could be an ideal fit for the Spurs. However, San Antonio has thus far shown little interest in acquiring the Hawks point guard, Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reports. The Hawks, who unexpectedly landed the top overall pick via the draft lottery, are widely expected to consider trade scenarios that would break up their backcourt of Young and Dejounte Murray. Atlanta scoured the league to gauge interest in all of its players prior to February’s trade deadline with the exception of forward Jalen Johnson, Fischer notes. San Antonio has no clear long-term floor leader and it’s expected t ..read more

Two days after honoring last year’s No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama with the presentation of his Rookie of the Year award on Friday (Andrew Lopez of ESPN has the details), the Spurs enjoyed a successful draft lottery for a second consecutive spring on Sunday. As Tom Orsborn of The San Antonio Express-News (subscription required) writes, general manager Brian Wright said San Antonio was thrilled to come away from Sunday’s event with the No. 4 and No. 8 picks. “You are always looking at how you build a team and how do you get enough bites at the apple with whatever mechanism, and two lotter ..read more

The Wizards already hold a pair of picks in the first round of this year’s draft at No. 2 and No. 26, but there’s an expectation that they’ll try to acquire another 2024 first-rounder, league sources tell Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. As Scotto explains, the Wizards’ current front office – led by president Michael Winger and general manager Will Dawkins – is focused on building through the draft and developing young talent. The group made its first lottery pick last year when it used the No. 7 selection to nab Bilal Coulibaly, who was one of the NBA’s youngest players this past season. It sound ..read more

A year removed from selecting Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, the Spurs will now boast two draft selections in the top eight of the impending 2024 draft. San Antonio’s own first-round pick moved up a spot to No. 4, while the team also secured the top-six protected 2024 first-rounder acquired from the Raptors as part of the trade for center Jakob Poeltl during the 2022/23 season, when that pick tumbled to No. 8 overall. The Spurs have a real opportunity for some cost-effective team-building here. But, in a draft that isn’t particularly well regarded, will San Antonio te ..read more

This year’s draft lottery isn’t nearly as highly anticipated as the 2023 event that determined which team would get the opportunity to select generational prospect Victor Wembanyama. In a team-by-team look at the lottery teams, Givony and Woo explore what’s at stake for each franchise on Sunday and which prospects they’ll be eyeing if they claim a top spot in the draft or if they end up where they are.
