The San Antonio Spurs winning the 2023 NBA Draft lottery and the right to select Victor Wembanyama changes everything. The city is excited about their basketball team again. The Spurs franchise went from drifting aimlessly in the sea of mediocrity to once again having a generational big man to build around.  With Wembanyama soon to be added to the mix, priorities and needs have changed. The Spurs will likely no longer have as much of an appetite to gamble on high risk, high reward prospects. For the foreseeable future, San Antonio will also surely prioritize how any potential roster addit ..read more

The front office and everyone else associated with the San Antonio Spurs continues to celebrate the NBA draft lottery win that will eventually land Victor Wembanyama in South Texas. The Spurs have been planning for the French phenom for a long while — and, for the third time, lottery luck has granted a generational big man to the Spurs franchise. I recently spoke with a Spurs source to try to get an idea of how the front office plans to build around Wembanyama.  “[Drafting Wembanyama] will impact roster decisions,” the source explained, “but patience and deliberate corporate growth will r ..read more

What an amazing day to be a fan of the San Antonio Spurs. It was a day that won’t soon be forgotten in South Texas. The Spurs entered Tuesday with a 14% chance to land the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and the right to draft French phenom Victor Wembanyama … and it happened. It actually happened. I don’t know where this day ranks in the best days in Spurs history but it’s somewhere up there in the top ten. Wembanyama is a 7-foot-5 teenager with an 8-foot wingspan who is absurdly talented for a player his size. If he stays healthy, he’s going to be good — really good. And if San Antonio play ..read more

The day that fans of the San Antonio Spurs have been waiting for since the start of the 2022-23 campaign is finally here. At around 7 p.m. CT, the NBA draft lottery will take place and ping pong balls will decide which pick the Spurs will have in the first round. We know that San Antonio will have one of the top seven picks in the draft. There’s a 14% chance the Spurs get the first pick, a 40.1% chance the Spurs get a top three pick and a 66.9% chance the Spurs get a top five pick.  In this thought exercise, I will react to each of the seven possible outcomes and lay out what I believe wi ..read more

Why the Spurs May Find It Impossible to Pass on Brandon Miller
SpursTalk
by LJ Ellis

Brandon Miller is widely considered to be one of the top three prospects in the 2023 NBA Draft along with Victor Wembanyama and Scoot Henderson. However, off the court issues have caused league observers to state emphatically that the Spurs won’t draft him.  Even if it’s a long shot that Miller ends up with the Spurs due to non-basketball reasons, there’s no doubt that the Spurs will have to dig deep and figure out if the off the court risks outweigh the potential on the court rewards.  Brandon Miller’s Strengths These days, there’s nothing NBA teams want more than a talented wing cr ..read more

Jarace Walker is a 19-year-old power forward who will likely go in the top half of the lottery during the 2023 NBA Draft. Depending on where the San Antonio Spurs are picking, there’s a definite chance that they could select the power forward who spent a successful season at the University of Houston. Heading into his freshman campaign, Walker was a five-star recruit who was known for his advanced feel for the game and his tenaciousness on defense. The teenager lived up to the hype and helped the Houston Cougars finish the season with a record of 33-4. The Spurs will find out where exactly the ..read more

Amen Thompson is one of the most mysterious and intriguing prospects in the 2023 NBA Draft. With the San Antonio Spurs in need of a dominant, franchise-altering linchpin, his tantalizing upside will be impossible for the organization to ignore. On May 16th, if the Spurs win the NBA draft lottery and end up with the top choice, picking Victor Wembanyama will be a no-brainer. But if the Spurs don’t get the first overall selection, Thompson will be a player that the Silver and Black have to take a long, hard look at drafting. The last two seasons, Amen Thompson played in the Overtime Elite with A ..read more

Grades: San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks – Game #82
SpursTalk

The San Antonio Spurs finished the 2022-23 season with a 138-117 victory over the Dallas Mavericks to end the campaign with a 22-60 record. The Spurs and the Houston Rockets tied for the second worst record in the NBA, while the Mavs limped to a 38-44 record and missed the playoffs Honestly, this was basically a glorified practice. The Mavs wanted to lose the game and they sat all of their best players, while the Spurs were without Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Zach Collins, Jeremy Sochan, Doug McDermott and Devonte’ Graham. At the end of the first quarter, the good guys led 42-14. The Mavs b ..read more
