It was a tale of two Josh Allens.   One, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ linebacker who has registered 13.5 sacks this season.  He recorded five tackles with two tackles for loss in in the Jaguars’ 31-27 loss to the Browns on Sunday.  The other, a six-foot-six quarterback drafted number one overall who plays like the poor man’s version of the Buffalo Bills’ quarterback.  That one gutted Sunday’s game out on a sore ankle to the detriment of the Jaguars team, throwing not one, not two, but three game-deciding interceptions. Ground control to Mary Kay -- Joe Flacco was just alright against the Rams

Mary Kay Cabot has dubbed Joe Flacco’s start against the LA Rams as “stellar.”    The etymology of  the word “stellar” comes from the Latin “stellaris”, meaning star.   The Cambridge Dictionary defines the adjective “stellar” as “extremely high in quality; excellent.” Mary Kay’s choice of words suggest that Joe Flacco turned in a star performance in the Browns’ 36-19 loss to the then sub .500 LA Rams. Flacco’s “other worldly” statistics?  He completed 23 of 44 passes for 258 yards with two touchdowns and one soul crushing interception that turned the game.  ..read more

[Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland.com] Six feet six inches tall, two hundred and thirty odd pounds and a rocket launcher for a right arm.  Check, check and check!   Former Superbowl winner and game MVP.  Quadruple and quintuple check!  Fellas, the Browns have an upgrade on their hands.     [AI]  Wait a minute.   Wasn’t that Superbowl a cool decade ago?   [Mary Kay] So what?    [AI] So, season three of Game of Thrones hadn’t premiered on HBO yet.   Are you aware that Flacco is 1-9 in the last 10 games where he’s thro ..read more

The Curious Case of the Browns' "Gotta have 'em" players in the 2022 and 2023 Drafts

Andrew Berry will not admit it.   If you ask him you will get some double speak about "maximizing value" and "remaining flexible" in the draft.   But the truth is that in the last two drafts the Browns have come in with two pretty odd priorities that shaped the overall draft strategy.     The plan in the 2022 NFL draft was to trade back to amass enough 3-5 round draft picks to justify taking Cade York in the 4th round.   They traded down, picked up a fourth round pick and exercised it on the kicker that they targeted.  The Br ..read more

Browns 2023 Draft Near-instant Reaction

We all know how to preface this.   The Browns started at a disadvantage with their first pick not coming until seventy-four.   They, of course were the architect of their disadvantage because of the Watson and Moore trades.   Rather than bore the reader with the background chatter of what we should reasonably expect from a litter of third round picks or later, I'll just jump right into it. First Round 12. Detroit Lions (from Cleveland through Houston and Arizona): Traded away with the Watson trade. A-   The Browns took a bold swing and give up ..read more

Welcome the Deshaun Watson era.   Beyond the public relations issues and beyond the eligibility concerns, the deal instantly shifted the Cleveland Browns to a different mode of talent acquisition.  Gone are the luxury picks in the first round that the Browns have enjoyed over the years.  More limited is the money under the cap that the Browns will have available to them going forward to make splashy free agent signings.     Part of the plan is Deshaun Watson being on the field and making players better around him.   It is hard to argu ..read more

2018 Browns Draft Revisited - The Homeless Guy vs. John Dorsey

The time was April of 2018 and all NFL eyes were on Cleveland.   The Browns owned the first pick and the fourth pick in the first round and the first pick and third pick in the second round. An embarrassment of draft riches. The "Land" was breathless with anticipation.  A real football guy was finally on board and primed to shock and awe us with his talent acquisition prowess.    Assured that the problem was not Hue Jackson's coaching but the nerds with their spreadsheets not being able to recognize a real football player if he slapped them on the ass, it was time to t ..read more

Don't Ruhle It Out -- A Baker Mayfield Trade Scenario.

The Baker Mayfield era is over in Cleveland.  The "in Dorsey we Trust" mantra has receded far into the background in Cleveland and rival NFL teams are not forming a line to trade for Baker and his $19 million guaranteed salary for the 2022-2023 NFL season. Early reports were that at least one NFL team wanted a mid-round draft pick from the Browns just to take on Baker's salary.   It is now speculated that, at best, the Browns will have to take on most if not all of Baker's $19 million salary to get a late-round draft pick in return.  In fact, there is a ever-increasing risk ..read more

Why do we in Cleveland think we need to put up with it?  Is it a misplaced sense of gratitude?  Like the Army of the Dead in The Lord of the Rings, James was released from his debt to Cleveland when he teamed with Kyrie to win an NBA championship over the Warriors.  Lebron soon left to do what was right for Lebron in LA.   We forgive him and are grateful for the championship.   It doesn't mean that we have to abide by his fake Cleveland sports team fandom.     Who at ESPN constantly monitors Lebron's Twitter feed to make sure tha ..read more

    - If it were a Jeopardy! question the question might be: "Andre Rison, Dwayne Bowe, Kenny Britt and Odell Beckham, Jr."  An acceptable answer: "Who are four big name wide receivers who came to Cleveland for the sole purpose of collecting paychecks." -     Odell Beckham opened his career as a Cleveland Brown by showing up for an introductory press conference only to bolt from OTAs a day later to "train" in Los Angeles and "get his head together."  He closed his career in Cleveland by showing a complete lack of testicular fortitude on a catchable ..read more
