After a year with a Voltbike Kodiak

My first Voltbike was a Mariner and it proved to be a reliable, strong, well made ebike. So it was a no Brainer for me to stay in the Voltbike family. Being a big guy at 6'2 I wanted a big bike and the Kodiak fit the bill. The thing about my Voltbike experience has been that from day 1 they have always worked the same. I come from the mc world where gas engines don't always work as they should. "How's your bike running?. The same...". Perfect... George, the boss, is a stand up guy and stands behind his product as does all the staff. The passenger floorboards have been removed but are easily p ..read more

Sure It's Only 40,000lbs

A quick story I loaded near Cleveland with 40000lbs of pipe and only had enough cash for dinner, toll roads or a scale... since I was good for about 47000lbs, I took a chance and had dinner and headed out. Somewhere in Indiana I pulled into a closed highway scale and found myself 3000lbs over gross...f#cker, that load was more like 51000lbs. Luckily I was fine in , so I snuck through and avoided scales until I was back home. Glad I had a good atlas. The scale at Fargo, westbound I94 and I29 was the best. A local driver gave me the plan when I asked about avoiding the scale on I94. The route wa ..read more

My First Time Into Ontario

Heading East out of Winnipeg, after driving around circle drive must be a lot different then than it is now. There were great distances of nothing, but the highway went a long way south before circling back to the east. I made my first trip into Ontario with another driver who went by the name Bear, and he looked like a guy who got away with the name. The first time I met Bear was at the Regina yard, he came in and the room quieted down as he was in a bad mood, something about scales and assholes who work in them... We both stopped on an on ramp just east of town to prepare for our hours of ..read more

The year was 2002 and I was working as a company driver, but trying to find a job that would allow me to not be on the road all the time. One day, the boss asked if instead of doing the Seattle thing for a while did I, along with 2 other drivers want to haul a water plant to Brownsvile, Texas to be forwarded into Mexico. I say sure, the other guys agree, and we are all off to Pitt Meadows to load. After putting these loads across the three trucks, we are all on the road. Sure is nice having the paperwork in order for all three of us as there was no problems and we crossed at Sumas in under 30 ..read more

After unloading at Skookumchuck Pulp, I was unable to get a load of zinc from Trail so I came back empty. The snow was flying and it was not going to let up anytime soon, just how I have always liked it. Earlier this same day, I had an unfortunate meeting with a moose. It was 5am, and I was travelling southbound on Highway 93, north of Canal Flats. It was snowing heavy and the plow had not been through for a while, when there was blur and a bang as I watched a great big moose, bigger than a horse, go bouncing off the left front of the truck. The crash was hard enough to open my drivers door ..read more

After coming home from a long Haul, we came back into the yard in Delta and couldn't wait to get out of there and head home. Got the trailers parked and load paperwork all put away and it was time to go home. The other driver that I was with parked near the Container Lift and plugged in his block heater for the night as it was expected to be cold that night. since there was only one plug, I left my truck and just headed home, hoping the next morning it would start. Well, the next morning came and when I got into the yard I saw some fire trucks cleaning up and leaving. After watching the com ..read more

Hurry Up and Wait: The Life of a Short Haul Trucker

There were many days while working for Stinson that we would end up hanging out at Terminal 5 as our containers were not released or some such problem. Often there would be multiple trucks, all stuck, waiting to go. Sometimes the problem was as simple as a number on a bill of lading was off, seal numbers, booking numbers, computer issues, or as sometimes was the case, equipment was down. There were other times when you could see the cantainers we needed but the crane was being serviced, and that took precedence over a bunch of trucks from Canada. The fact is we are stuck here and sometimes mi ..read more

Hauling Heavy Containers to Seattle
Hope Hot Shot

Around 1990, i worked for a firm hauling heavy containers from Vancouver to Seattle. Stinson Transportation had a fleet of odd trailers with jeeps and booster axles to facilitate the moving of over weight 40 and 20 foot containers. A normal day would see me out of the yard no later than 3am, so as to be first in line at the dock in Seattle. The point of leaving so early is to try and beat some of the Seattle morning rush hour(s). One needs to be past Everett before 6am, or arrival at the dock could be way later than the 7am opening time. https://video.wixstatic.com/video/35f2db_38835ad2d57a4c ..read more

Sunday Summit Highway 3

Highway 3 westbound from Princeton the highway climbs past The Copper Mountain Mine, an open pit mine about 20 km south of town. The Highway continues until The Sunday Summit. After decending Westbound from Sunday Summit, there is a killer corner at the bottom of the hill where Highway 3 passes Placer FSR. This is a long, steep hill from the top with some slow corners where a rig can get out of control real fast. Near the bottom there is a sign stating Steep Hill Ahead, and you wonder what you've been coming down for the last few KM's. Well, it gets even steeper, and they even supplied a runa ..read more

Me and My 1972 Yamaha XS650

I believe the year was 1979 and I had somehow come upon a nice Yamaha XS650, my second 650. I rode around checking out where the gang was, but everybody was busy. I checked my wallet and found enough for a ride south into the states, so I grabbed some essentials and headed south. Being across the border at noon, I cruised down Interstate 5 (I5) to Bellingham where I got off the Interstate and followed the Chuckanut Drive past the Oyster Bar and onto Widbey Island. Sure was nice that earlier in my riding career I belonged to a group of riders that met every Sunday Morning for a ride somewhere ..read more
