“What if she comes back years later to take my child away from me?” has got to be in the top 3 fears that prospective adoptive parents have. I think Hollywood has done a great job in advancing this narrative about adoption and in a world where our views of reality are largely driven by the media, this kind of “horror story” makes it even less desirable for people to consider adoption as an option. You can imagine how heavy my heart was when I came across a story on eNCA about a KZN father who wants his adopted children back, it is every adoptive parent´s worst nightmare! One’s decision to adopt is probably one of the most intimate yet exposing decisions, well, at least it was for me. Remember, most people who adopt are battling one kind of infertility issue or another and nothing questions your being, your humanness more than being faced with infertility. The very nature of species on this earth is to grow and multiply and at the very centre of our beings as humans is the desire to love and be loved. We grow up knowing that there is no bond greater than that of parent and child and when that bond is compromised, life is compromised. We watch shows like Khumbul ..read more

I have openly shared about my adoption journey with my Facebook community and over the past 5 years, I have had many people reaching out to me about the adoption process, the legal, emotional, spiritual of it all and nothing makes me happier than getting those enquiries. "Black people don't adopt, chomi" is the response I got from a friend of mine when I mentioned adoption as a way to motherhood. My google history on adoption websites and articles dates back to 2012 when I knew for sure I would adopt, and I would adopt very soon, but I delayed making that “cast in stone” decision, going back to the websites every few months just to keep the desire alive. The more I researched and read about adoption in South Africa, I was confronted by damning statistics on the number of abandoned children in the country, the feeble number of children that are adopted compared ..read more

You will learn that the screening process is an integral part of the adoption process. The screening process is there to guide and inform the social workers and legal professionals about the prospective adoptive parent/s. It is in this process where you have to really get in touch with yourself, to be honest with yourself about your motives for embarking on the adoption process. I was asked to write about what being a mother means to me, to write about something I had never experienced before. Below I share what I submitted to my social worker. I have kept this close to me as my True North. It ..read more

Ok, so, here I am, I have made this momentous decision to be a single mother, as if that isn´t tough already, but I want to be a single mother through adoption. What happens now? Where do I start? January 1, 2015, I was out at Haartebeespoort Dam with friends, some are hungover from New Year’s eve celebrations, we’re enjoying left over braai meat, just chilling and I am on my phone googling adoption agencies and this time it went one step further, I actually filled in the enquiry forms. New year, new goals, renewed gym memberships, we all go through it, but for me it was a conscious decision t ..read more
