After a frost this morning, a blue dome day eventuated until mid afternoon when it started to cloud up from the south. Gust front moved across at 4;15pm with a change to southerlies, strong for a time. Came onto rain later but only 1.8mm recorded here from this event. Rain and wind easing this evening. Cloud pictures of the front in the distance and cloud above in the skies prior to the arrival of the front. Statistics: Posted by NZ Thunderstorm Soc — Wed 08/05/2024 11:28 ..read more

Southerly arrived around 6pm with some strong wind gusts and brief heavy rain. The front certainly raced up the plains, as around 5pm there was a faint cloud line to the south and within half an hour it was pretty much on the cities doorstep. Those heavy showers blew up on the windchange with the assistance of Banks Peninsula. Main rain band moving up the plains now. Statistics: Posted by Storm Struck — Wed 08/05/2024 07:26 ..read more

Trying to get a photo of the gust front but the iPhone 11 just doesn’t do it justice. One of the better gust fronts that I’ve seen in recent years. Big massive puffs of cloud at the top with the scud - like clouds scraping the ground at the bottom. Very cool. Statistics: Posted by darcyplumb — Wed 08/05/2024 04:44 ..read more

Chch Aero's lowest ever May air temp is -6.4C on May 29th in 2015, followed by -5.3C on May 26th in 2001, from records since 1954. I remember that morning in West Melton, couldn't drop the kids off at the childcare caus their pipes had frozen, only time that's ever happened there! Wouldn't rule out a -5 degree frost Friday morning for chch. Record breaking may cold. These are July temperatures, even this morning getting down to the negatives. The media should be coming out with record cold for may by end of week just as they like to with how 'hot' it gets Statistics: Posted by mikestormchaser — Tue 07/05/2024 22:55 ..read more
