Building potting mix for container blueberries
Growing Fruit

So i have decide to grow a few blueberries in containers. The containers i will be using are 25 gallon self wicking tubs (made from recycled cow mineral tubs). Im looking to build a blueberry specific soil for them. In my area i have a local place to buy bulk pine bark mulch and pine bark fines. Was thinking a mix of those 2 or 1 of those, peat moss and perlite would probably do the trick. Just recently joined here and thought, why not make a post and get the concensus of the masses! Im located in central Arkansas, zone 8A. Thanks 4 posts - 3 participants Read full topic ..read more

My peach tree is infected

Hello folks, I’m new to gardening and feel really bad about neglecting my peach tree that I planted a couple years ago. Not knowing anything I simply planted and and forgot about it until now. My peach tree looks to like it’s infected. Majority of the trunk and branches has a greyish color to it or covered in tree sap. It’s gotten so bad that one of the major branch of the tree completely swelled up and died. I had to amputate it and will spray some pruning seal on the area. Can anyone identify if it has a disease or infestation? How can I cure my peach tree? I really don’t want to chop it dow ..read more

Planting heartnuts. any tips/tricks?

I just received 2 bareroot heartnut cultivars from Grimo. a Grimo 89 and a Grimo 94. planning to plant them in 5 foot plantera tree protectors I received with the trees, and just my standard planting method of adding mykos to the hole and mulching with wood chips. Grimo recommends bone meal being added to the hole so I’ll do that as well. I always water in with some fish emulsion to prevent transplant shock. planning to plant the 2 cultivars 9-12 meters apart as recommended by Grimo I read that Zinc sulfate is used to prevent witches broom but takes several years after application to become nu ..read more

Renaissancefarms.org Buyer Beware

I want to start by saying that I have ordered several times from Renaissancefarms.org through the years and had great experiences in the past. However, in the last year or so something has gone horribly wrong there. I had recommended RF to quite a few people through the years because of the huge selection, good prices, and real life photos of tomatoes on a kitchen plate that hadn’t been photo shopped. I ordered in February this year, which is way later than I normally do. Since I had never had any problems, I just ordered my order and went on. After a few weeks, my order status changed from pa ..read more

I did not realize there were some Georgia heritage Pears. And since it’s only a few varieties; I just need a few root stock. We have the invasive pears all over but wish to avoid adding them to the landscape here. I noticed you can get Bartlett dirt cheap from a number of forestry programs. But would Bartlett be a good choice? 2 posts - 2 participants Read full topic ..read more

Help me pick a redbud cultivar
Growing Fruit

Hoping to get some advice on picking out a redbud cultivar to plant on my property. I like the multicolored leaf varieties but read that ‘Rising Sun’ has weak branch angles and doesn’t hold up well to wind and snow (also has significant dieback each winter) I’m not as interested in the lighter leaf color of ‘Rising Sun’ but I’m wondering if these characteristics carry over to similar varieties from Ray and Cindy Jackson of Jackson Nursery like ‘Sparkling Wine’ and ‘Hearts A’fire’ that have red transitioning leaves. While ‘Flame Thrower’ is from a different breeding program (NC State University ..read more

Around My Fruit & Veggie Garden, With Aim Toward Accessibility

I haven’t been active on the forum for some time. I have a good size home orchard and garden in Southwest Washington State. I haven’t had a lot to say lately, and there have also been some major challenges that take time and energy. I thought it might be useful to describe my approach toward better accessibility practices, for my fruits and vegetables. Accessibility can make all the world of difference to a fruit grower ir gardener, if done right. By accessibility, I include these concepts - Not reaching too high or climbing ladders Not reaching too low or digging at ground level. Reducing lab ..read more
