My grandparents immigrated to the US from India about 50 years ago, and my mom became the first Girl Scout in our family. She has continued her involvement with Girl Scouts as the Service Unit Cookie Manager, or the Cookie Grandma (as my dad calls her), and made sure that my sister and I would learn to serve others while being supported by people that believe we are the leaders of tomorrow.  My younger sister and I began Girl Scouts a decade ago, and although we are not in the same troop we had the opportunity to collaborate in fundraising for our Gold Awards. For the past three years, m ..read more

by Katie G.  I first joined Girl Scouts in the seventh grade and had the opportunity to meet amazing girls, volunteer, and complete interesting and challenging projects throughout my five years as a Juliette. In my final year as a Girl Scout, I was selected to participate in the Forever Green project, and spent the school year meeting with other girls from around the council and working on environmental conservation projects. We learned how to make rain gardens, taught younger girls about protecting the environment, and hosted plastic bag drives throughout the area to provide people with ..read more

Guest Blog: Joy’s Week On The Hill

Before my week at Capitol Hill, I had the preconceived notion that politicians in Congress were cold and uncaring, only reaching out to constituents every few years for a superficial re-election. However, after working in Representative David Trone’s office for a week, I discovered just how wrong my assumptions were. Congressman Trone’s office was welcoming and inspiring, quite the opposite of the lofty aura I had pictured in my head. Even though I did not get to meet the Congressman personally (Congress was out of session),  I could feel his unwavering customer service mindset through ev ..read more

As a Girl Scout Congressional Aide, I had the pleasure of shadowing in the office of Congressman Gregorio Kilili.    During the week long session, I was given the opportunity to learn and experience many new things. While I was there, I was tasked with delivering multiple different letters and packages to different Congressmen and Senators.  In order to deliver these packages, I had to use the tunnels that connect the different buildings.     Starting out I thought that I would never be able to navigate the tunnels, but eventually it became easier and convenient. It wa ..read more

Guest Blog: Latina Girl Scouts Are What The World Needs

by Jen G. Growing up I never knew that I had the opportunity to become a Girl Scout. As a young Latina, some opportunities just didn’t seem like they were meant for me. However, after my most recent internship with Girl Scouts Nation’s Capital I see that not only are these misconceptions,  but there is even more of a reason for Girl Scouts to be promoted in Latin communities and in communities (of color) everywhere. This is a training ground for girls to become strong leaders. Like most parents, my parents worked tirelessly to provide us with the best life and opportunities possible, and ..read more

By Taylor K. In early July, my Girl Scout troop — seven girls and four adults — set off on our journey to India. While all of us had been fortunate enough to travel outside of the country at least once, most of us had never been to a developing country or at least not one as different from the U.S. as India. I had many different visions of India from the movies I had watched, stories I’ve heard and pictures I’d seen. Based on these sources, I had created a picture of India in my head filled with both stereotypes and truths. As I stepped on our first plane, I was eager to see which parts of my ..read more
