Shruti, a high school senior from Lexington, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, through her project, “Speak Up!” to help girls find and raise their voices by enhancing the public speaking capabilities of students internationally. Members of Girl Scout Junior Troop 62798 visit the Danvers MDAR Apiary and explore a beehive–after stepping into bee suits. Last fall, members of Girl Scout Junior Troop 62798 from North Reading earned their Girl Scout Bronze Award after becoming concerned about the endangered status of bees given their critical role in our ecosystem. A member of Boston’s Daring Diva’s Girl Scout Cadette troop meets with a healthcare practitioner to launch their Menstrual Love Silver Award service project. Last year, Girl Scout Cadette Troop 82487 from Boston, otherwise known as the “Daring Divas,” earned their Girl Scout Silver Award by addressing inequalities in their community surrounding lack of menstrual product access, knowledge, period shame, and negative stigma. Sarah speaks about the high school robotics team, and demonstrates the “Big Robot” at a STEM Sisters event. Sarah, a senior from North Easton, earned her Girl Scout Gold Award after learning an alarming statistic about young girls in STEM. Sarah learned that girls begin to show startingly low confidence in STEM at an early age, and often decide not to participate in STEM activities as a result. “A circle’s round, it has no end. That’s how long I want to be your friend.” A familiar camp song to many may have gained a new meaning on June 24, 2022. Eileen “Mac” McCaffrey, (1942- 2019), was a Girl Scout in every sense of the phrase. She started as a camper & youth member, before jumpstarting her camper career as a counselor, then as a volunteer, business manager, and assistant director to both day and resident camps at Wind In The Pines. It all started at a cookie booth sale. As they were selling Girl Scout Cookies, Lauren and her fellow Girl Scouts were approached by a Mansfield resident requesting their help in reducing the high number of plastic straws being used in town. “She shared a link to a viral video of a sea turtle that had a plastic straw stuck up its nose,” says Lauren, “and after watching, I knew I had to do something.” Lauren started researching this issue, and learned plastic straws are not easily recyclable because they are too lightweight to make it through mechanical recycling sorters.
