I knew I wanted to listen to a Nina Simone album this week, but the real struggle was trying to decide which one. She’s such an icon, I was terrified I would choose the wrong album and not do her proper justice. This one seemed to have some of her most iconic songs on it though.  I was familiar with a few Nina Simone songs but had never taken a close listen to one of her albums. I adored her voice and piano skills, but never got around to it. But early this week I decid ..read more

Sunday Review Challenge (8/30/20): KiCk i by Arca Sounds Like a Mutated Lab Experiment… In The Best Way Possible

Picture credit: https://genius.com/albums/Arca/Kick-iHappy Sunday! Let’s chat… I had actually heard Arca’s music before this, stumbling upon and enjoying her self-titled album, Arca. However, KiCk i was a massive departure from Arca’s somber and hauntingly electric tone (I got the crap scared out of me by Piel while camping in the dark… but that’s a whole different story). KiCk i is a joyful and exciting album ripe with collaborations and lots and lots of gun sound effects.  Before I begin I would like to say that many of the songs on this album are in Spanish, which I am not even close t ..read more

Picture credit: https://www.pinclouds.com/new-pageHappy Sunday! Let’s chat… So Pinc Louds found me through one of  Spotify’s Discover Weekly, something I could never have predicted because, one, those mixes usually suck, and two, I’ve stopped listening to them for that purpose. However, on this specific day, I was starved for new music, so I reluctantly began to skip through the mix. I was starting to regret my decision until I heard Claudi’s voice ring out at the beginning of ‘Speak to Me Dead’ on their self-titled EP. I immediately rushed to their first album, prepared to obsess over th ..read more

Picture credit: https://in-correcto.bandcamp.com/album/in-correcto-049-juntura La Muchacha and Santiago Navas just dropped a new EP titled ‘Juntura’ (in English: ‘Joint’). It’s only three songs long, but a great listen, I specifically loved the scat-like vocals performed by La Muchacha. I also found this cover of one of the songs on the EP, ‘No Me Toques Mal’, by La Otra and it is downright fierce: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHSY-7Rykl4 Fav song: ‘Lacras Sin Remedio’ Kids?: I can’t much speak to this, as the EP is in Spanish. For English speaking children this album is completel ..read more

Listen on Spotify (This is the Nina Simone version, my personal favorite and arguably most popular, but any is fine, however, the lyrics may vary slightly): https://open.spotify.com/track/32BTFbqhSvYKftE0e8a8d4?si=Ot1mEqDCQveVU73Y8unHYA Lyrics ({ }= alternate lyrics): They say everything can be replaced They say every distance is not near So I remember every face Of every man who put me here I see my light come shining From the west down to the east Any day now, any day now I shall be released They say every man needs protection They say that every man must fall Yet {so} I swear I see my refle ..read more

Picture credit: https://www.nonesuch.com/journal/mountain-man-new-live-album-look-me-dont-look-me-out-now-nonesuch-2020-08-07 The newest music of August in a short ‘n sweet review, coming right at you! Today we’re staying pretty folksy and kinda indie, hope y’all enjoy! Mountain Man just released an album named ‘Look at Me Don’t Look at Me’! recorded live at St. Mark’s Cathedral giving it an ethereal and eternal feel. The trio harmonizes beautify, their vocals echoing throughout the space. The songs kind of froze time for me, making me just want to sit there and listen. This album also seems t ..read more
