Please see what my chicken is doing and tell me what you think. She's about 9 weeks old. Her crop feels kinda water balloon like.. trying to bring her inside and give her some water with a little ACV and little Greek yogurt. Not sure what to do. Been massaging the crop a little as well.. Just worried about her ..read more

Something is wrong with one of my hens! Help!

Fauna turned a year old February 15th (she was supposed to be a Sapphire Gem, but I think she’s mixed). She’s usually a really active girl, and sometimes can be rude to a couple of my other hens. Around noon today I noticed she was acting weird. She was underneath our small coop (they use it for laying eggs?‍♀️?) just sitting there. I sort of pulled her out gently so I could get a better look at her. She’s acting really lethargic, and has been sleeping since I found her like that. She... Something is wrong with one of my hens! Feeding hard beans

Are hard beans safe to feed to chickens? Even if cooked, I am concerned about amount and side effects such as gas and any discomfort from getting to much. Basically, I am referencing what I know about beans and human consumption. I have a few lbs of OLD hard beans that I would like to use instead of just throwing them away. Let me hear from you. I am new on the forum ..read more

Great Pyrenees and Chickens

I recently fenced in a large area for my chickens to free range (about an acre) during the day and purchased a Great Pyrenees puppy to guard my flock and home. The pup is about 12 weeks now and for the first few weeks with the new fence I had no issues with predators. The past week I've lost 2 hens and one rooster to a predator. One of the hens and large rooster had head and neck totally eaten, one had partial breast missing. The hen today was almost all eaten. Head in tact, all neck bones... Giving Hatching a Go
Chicken Forum

I've decided to try hatching my own chicks this summer. Because of my rural location, ordering chicks online and having them shipped is difficult. Our post office is only open half a day, so if chicks arrive in the afternoon, they have to stay an extra day in their shipping box, which has led to many not being alive when I can pick them up and most dying shortly thereafter. So, I've been limited to the breeds that the feed stores in our area offer, which are often more common breeds that are... Giving Hatching a Go ..read more

Pretty sure I have two cockerels, thoughts?

I hatched Nigel and Heihei back in the beginning of February with help from Martha (one of my young broody hens). She wasn’t a really good mom (pecking at the babies), so I hand raised them. Nigel ended up being a rooster and we were positive of it when they turned 6 weeks. However, a friend of mine lost their rooster and really needed one, and they had some chicks that were about the same age as Nigel, so we let them take Nigel (I don’t really NEED a rooster, and they did). He’s doing... Pretty sure I have two cockerels, thoughts ..read more

Lost my first chicken??

I went out to the coop yesterday check on everyone, check feed and water, check for eggs, etc…initially it was weird because ALL the chickens greet me at the gate, but I was missing one, I figured she was probably in the nest (although she’s never in the nest that early), but when I looked in the coop she wasn’t there. I looked around the run, and Feathers (my splash Easter Egger, one of my sweetest birds) was in the dig box I made them, and she was laying different and really weird, I ran... REHOMING 3 MALE COTURNIX QUAILS IN LONG BEACH CA FOR FREE
Chicken Forum

Last August, I hatched 10 coturnix quails and the ratio of female-male was terrible. I have an excess in male quails that I had to separate into a different coop from the females. Because of their isolation from the females, they have this crowing problem that is frustrating my neighbors so my only choice is to rehome them. If anyone needs some male quails to add to their flock in Long Beach California PLEASE feel free to contact me ..read more
