Hey Jan, it’s the first pond you get to when you walk out towards the small bridge to your left as you walk in. It’s also an EBird hotspot. Statistics: Posted by benackerley — Sat May 04, 2024 7:05 pm ..read more

The brown teal was still around this evening. We watched it swim south past the bird hide where it remained out of view for the next 20 minutes. A spotless crake was also calling by the new pond at dusk, for the second consecutive evening. Statistics: Posted by wazzagonewild — Sat May 04, 2024 8:30 am ..read more

Emperor penguins suffered mass breeding failures in 2023 amid record low sea ice LONDON, April 25 (Reuters) - Record low sea ice in late 2023 led to breeding failures in one-fifth of Antarctica's emperor penguin colonies, scientists with the British Antarctic Survey said on Thursday. Emperors - the world's largest penguin species and one of only two endemic to Antarctica — depend on sea ice firmly attached to the shore to lay their eggs and raise their chicks. A massive number of water birds here this morning, to the background boom of duck shooters. Up to 300 Canada geese, coming and going constantly, 240 grey teal and heaps of others. 25 spoonbill, 48 godwits, including one with green flag from Queensland (FDC), wrybills, banded dotterels, Caspian terns, wf terns etc, and the long staying little egret has just been putting on a good show for us. Great morning to be here. 20240504100218__77A3982.JPG Statistics: Posted by Paul Gibson — Fri May 03, 2024 9:39 pm ..read more

Coould well be worth sending that recording an an Australian expert. Not sure how to find one thgou. I lived in Perth for a year and saw some Carnabys in the wild a few times when adventuring out of town. It sounds very similar to one. There are two of them at Sullivans Lake in the middle of Whakatane at the moment. There is normally at least one in the area each year. Second time I have seen two together in Whakatane, last year there was a pair hanging around. Statistics: Posted by Ken George — Fri May 03, 2024 8:10 pm ..read more
