Hi everyone. At the bottom of my road there’s a drainage ditch which is home to mallard and moorhen at this time of year. However when I was walking the shop earlier I noticed this little thing perched on a sheet of discarded Heras fencing? I want to say a juvenile of some sort?? But it wasn’t being attended to by the adult mallards. There were 2 others also in and around the reeds. One of them had markings on its rear of 2 thick white patches separated by a black centre “bar” Anyone any... Read more ..read more

Taken at Vale Santo, near Cape St. Vincent two days ago. Thekla's Lark is by far the most common lark there - but Crested Larks seem to be very rare in this particular location. This one looks like Crested to me - longer bill with a straight lower mandible. But as it is unusual, am posting for confirmation ..read more

Hello all, Trying to identify a bird that has a two note call. Definitely lower pitched. Almost sounds like ding dong or hello. It will make one call and then nothing for probably 10 minutes so it’s hard to catch. I’ve heard it late at night and during the day. I know that’s vague but would appreciate any thoughts! Thanks ..read more

I’m looking to do some birding around Kathmandu on Saturday. I’m reading mixed reviews on the safety aspect of hiking up Pulchowki mountain alone, mostly regarding robberies. A friend and I are going to be transitting through Qatar in October, and we're looking to spend a day and do some birding. In particular, Irakhiya Farm looks like the place to go. Are there any birding guides in Qatar, or even a local birder that would be available on a weekday to take us out there and any other worthwhile spots ..read more

Polite bluejays mad at me because I yelled at the squirrels.

I really like the bluejays in the neighborhood. They stand patiently on my deck, waiting for the smaller birds to vacate the feeder, before going to it. I wanted to reward that behavior, so I bought a 20 lb. bag of unshelled, unsalted peanuts and started laying them on the deck railing. They loved the peanuts and for a couple weeks I enjoyed watching them land on the railing, hop, hop, hop to the nuts, then try and decide which peanut to take first. The squirrels are really greedy... Read more ..read more
