Taylor Makar has heard all of the chirps. Makar has chosen to follow in his famous brother’s footsteps, first playing for the Brooks Bandits in the AJHL and now at the University of Massachusetts. He’ll probably hear about it Thursday, when UMass plays the University of Denver in the opening round of the 2024 NCAA men’s ice hockey tournament in Springfield, Mass. Yeah, he’s the younger brother of Colorado Avalanche superstar Cale Makar. If that’s an opposing player’s plan to get inside his head, good luck with that. “He had so many things said to him on the ice,” said Brooks coach Ryan Papaioa ..read more

Canadiens slow down surging Avalanche, snap Colorado’s nine-game winning streak
Denver Post » Colorado Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche have looked unstoppable at home for much of the season and in any venue since a wave of additions before the NHL trade deadline. The Montreal Canadiens stopped them Tuesday night at Ball Arena. Colorado scored on the first shift of the game, but that was all for the high-powered Avs. The Canadiens snapped their nine-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory. It was only the Avalanche’s seventh loss in this building in 35 games this season. “It was frustrating because we didn’t check hard enough in the first period,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “Tonight, we did not outscore ..read more

Nathan MacKinnon’s work ethic has propelled him to record heights, and the legendary comparisons are just beginning

Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin end warmups before every Colorado Avalanche game the same way. MacKinnon sets up in the left circle. Drouin finds a spot on the right side of the ice, armed with a couple handfuls of pucks he’s gathered. Then they practice cross-ice passes to each other, with MacKinnon eventually shooting each towards the net on a one-timer. The pair of old friends who have been reunited do this at the end of nearly every practice as well. They change the angle of the passes. Some have a little more sauce on them. Over and over — Drouin to MacKinnon for a one-timer, Drouin ..read more

In a game that featured two friends chasing records held by Wayne Gretzky, Jonathan Drouin reminded everyone why he’s been one of the best stories on the Colorado Avalanche this season. Drouin had two goals and an assist, including the game-winner in overtime, to help the Avalanche erase a four-goal deficit for the third time in franchise history in a wild 5-4 victory Sunday against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Ball Arena. It was also the ninth straight win for the Avalanche, and the club is now a league-best 28-6-0 at home this season. There were six or seven future members of the Hockey Hall o ..read more

Locke Mayotte will be one of the unexpected winners after the Colorado Avalanche’s flurry of moves before the NHL trade deadline earlier this month. Brandon Duhaime was one of four new additions to the Avs roster. The importance of his acquisition gained more clarity a few days later when the club announced Logan O’Connor needed season-ending hip surgery. Duhaime arrived in Colorado to help bolster the Avalanche’s depth at forward and on the penalty kill. He’s one of those guys who embraces playing one of the more thankless roles on an NHL team. How did he evolve into that type of player? Lock ..read more

Denver Post » Colorado Avalanche
by Corey Masisak

The only drama left in the final period Friday night at Ball Arena was whether Nathan MacKinnon could continue his pursuit of NHL history and extend his home scoring streak to 33 games. MacKinnon took care of it with 13:59 to spare, then added another on a surgical power-play goal barely more than a minute later to help the Colorado Avalanche crush the Columbus Blue Jackets, 6-1. It was Colorado’s eighth straight victory, and moved the Avalanche to the top of the Central Division with 95 points. “The streak is a result of all the hard work and dedication that he brings to the game on a nightly ..read more

Avalanche’s trade deadline additions paying big dividends on the penalty kill
Denver Post » Colorado Avalanche
by Corey Masisak

Just about everything is going well for the Colorado Avalanche since the arrival of four new players before the NHL trade deadline and the return of Valeri Nichushkin from the NHL-NHLPA Player Assistance Program. The Avs have won all five games with those players available, including a sweep on a road trip through Western Canada and St. Louis. One aspect of Colorado’s game that the new guys have provided a spark for is the penalty kill. Colorado had a great start to the season on the PK, but the Avs had slipped in that area and fallen out of the top 10 in the NHL. The Avs are a perfect 14-for ..read more
