The Seattle Sounders have bolstered their technical staff with the addition of Craig Dalrymple as the head of professional player development. Dalrymple had most recently served as the Inter Miami Academy director from 2021-23 after previously working for the Vancouver Whitecaps for a decade, which included a brief stint as interim head coach in 2018. In Seattle, Dalrymple is primarily tasked with helping players transition from the academy to the professional ranks, with an emphasis on the highest-potential players. The role was previously filled by Henry Brauner prior to his promotion to Te ..read more

Pedro de la Vega could feature as soon as this week

One of the obvious bright spots in Tuesday's training session was the involvement of Pedro de la Vega. Not only was the midfielder close to a full participant — he mostly played as a neutral — but he also looked as sharp as ever, banging in several goals and generally playing with the kind of dynamism the Seattle Sounders have been missing through most of their first seven games. It has now been exactly six weeks since the Sounders first announced that de la Vega's injury timeline was about 6-8 weeks, and he has at least an outside chance of seeing some minutes against the Vancouver Whitecaps ..read more

Ship's Log, April 15: Going against your own grain

In the second half against FC Dallas the Seattle Sounders took a rather calm and defensive posture. The subs were late and only three were used. Schmetzer said that the draw felt like two points dropped, but also took some blame for that because he's the one that used 60% of the subs with two coming rather late. By stack ranking, his subs per match is an improvement (though essentially even with 2023 ..read more

Postgame Pontifications: Reluctant to change

It's surely a bit premature to call the Seattle Sounders' 5-0 win over CF Montreal a “false dawn,” but after their 0-0 tie with FC Dallas on Saturday, there's at least some evidence that it might have been. After doing so much right against Montreal, the Sounders largely reverted to their previous form against Dallas. The Sounders were stout defensively, but were a bit too conservative as the game wore on. MLS is a league where home teams tend to have an outsized advantage and the Sounders have never been particularly good in Frisco ..read more

Ship's Log, April 12: Sounders now more academy-powered than Dallas

Roster construction in MLS has never been more varied, and it's about to get even more complicated and open (most teams will be able to sign more U22s and there's more GAM to be injected into the system). Seattle, under Lagerwey & Co., was probably one of the most balanced. On Saturday night against Dallas, one of the league's supposed jewels in player development, the Sounders are likely going to start at least five players who came through the developmental system plus two others they drafted. Only one of those internal talents is a current star (World Cup attender, MLS Best XI, CCL Bes ..read more

Riding the high from a very good win over CF Montreal last weekend, the mood at Seattle Sounders training has been undeniably good in the lead-up to a trip to take on FC Dallas on Saturday. "They were obviously in good spirits because of the last performance,” Head Coach Brian Schmetzer said after training on Thursday. Not only did the Sounders pick up their first win of the season, they dominated the game, kept a clean sheet, and were relentless in the attack as they piled up their five goals. For a team that's struggled to put the ball in the net, scoring five goals in a game is a clear caus ..read more

Raul Ruidiaz scored a pair of first-half goals and the Seattle Sounders won for the first time this season, beating CF Montreal 5-0 on Saturday night. The Sounders (1-3-2) jumped on top in the 20th minute when Jackson Ragen used his head to set up Ruidiaz's left-footed shot from the left side of the box to the bottom right corner of the net off a set piece. Ruidiaz's second goal -- and fourth of the season -- came via a penalty kick in the 27th minute as Seattle took a 2-0 lead into halftime. The PK was set up when Albert Rusnak drew a foul on Montreal defender Joel Waterman in the penalty ar ..read more

If there's one clear takeaway from the early Western Conference standings it is that an injury crisis will put you near the bottom. Both FC Dallas and the Seattle Sounders show that. Dallas is missing almost every attacker you've heard of while the Sounders went without a spine for over a month. Saturday night the healing Sounders travel to Frisco to face the still-injured Toros ..read more

Sounders notebook: Raul Ruidiaz's goal, performance leaves lasting impression

Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer would've been happy with a 1-0 win last week against CF Montreal. Well, in picking one goal out of the five Seattle pelted Montreal with, let it be Raul Ruidiaz's left-footed blast in the 20th minute. The free-kick set piece — won off a foul against Ruidiaz — was designed and executed with precision. “When I saw the opportunity, I tried it,” said Ruidiaz, as translated from Spanish, of the thought process behind his attempt ..read more
