The 2024 NHL Entry Draft will be here before we know it, so it’s time to start looking at who the Blue Jackets could pick with the fourth overall pick on Friday, June 28. Macklin Celebrini will be the first pick in the draft and will go to the San Jose Sharks. Many consider him to be behind Bedard in terms of skill, but not by much. Missing out on winning the lottery yet again was another… Source ..read more

North Division Finals Open Thread: Cleveland Monsters vs. Syracuse Crunch

After a rusty start to their first playoff game, the Cleveland Monsters rebounded with three straight wins to eliminate the Belleville Senators and advance in the Calder Cup Playoffs. (I would run through a wall for Trent Vogelhuber. Find a way to keep him in the organization) The next round starts tonight, with the Monsters hosting the Syracuse Crunch (Tampa Bay’s affiliate) in the… Source ..read more

2023-24 Player Recap: Yegor Chinakhov had a promising season cut short by injury and coaching

Yegor Chinakhov started slowly last year, going 0-0-0 in his first five games for the CBJ in November, but really took off once he was placed on a line with fellow Russians Kirill Marchenko and Dmitry Voronkov. Chinakhov put together a hot stretch around the December holidays of 12 points in 10 games as the Jackets found their footing, challenged playoff teams such as the Washington Capitals and… Source ..read more

2023-24 Player Review: Damon Severson is a cautionary tale
The Cannon

A complaint about Jarmo Kekalainen that we’ve repeated in articles and comments here at The Cannon, and on The Cannon Cast, is that he collected good players, but didn’t effectively build a team out of them. He also overpaid too many depth players, which left little flexibility under the salary cap. One example of this problem is Damon Severson. He’s a solid player, but was it worth signing… Source ..read more

2023-24 Player Review: Dmitri Voronkov left a mark

Day 2 draft picks are always a bit of a crapshoot. These players always have something that catches the eye (like, say, size), but also have way more question marks than the players that go in the top half of the first round. There is so much that can go wrong in their development, and many won’t reach the NHL at all. This is even more true with Russians, who may prefer to stay home and take the… Source ..read more

The Columbus Blue Jackets will pick 4th overall in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. The Blue Jackets entered the lottery with better odds to fall than move up. Here were the odds pre-drawing. No teams behind the Blue Jackets moved ahead of them, and the Jackets did not win the lottery and move up. Ahead of the lottery, Bob McKenzie released his draft rankings – here’s what the… Source ..read more

Tonight at 6:30 PM EDT on ESPN, the NHL will announce the order of the first 16 picks in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. Only teams in the bottom 11 are eligible to move up to the #1 pick, and only teams in the bottom 12 can move up to #2. The Columbus Blue Jackets were the fourth worst team in the league, so they can move up into the top 2, but are also most likely to move down to either #5 or #6. Source ..read more

2023-24 Player Review: David Jiricek was underwhelming, but his future is still bright

Mr. Jiricek was a hot topic of conversation this season. From his performance on-ice to making the news off-ice, he was a contributor in many different ways. The good news is that his stock isn’t any less than it was a year ago. We will discuss the highs and lows later, but for now, let’s focus on the trend I mentioned in the Danforth review: coaching. Jiricek spent most of the season getting… Source ..read more
