How I am creating content for my new pet website

I’ve mentioned a couple of times on dogfluential that I’m in the very early stages of planning a new pet website. The purpose of this post is to explain a bit about how I am creating content for my new pet website. Why am I doing this? Because the world cannot have enough pet websites, obviously. One of the things that I’ve decided early on in this process that I will not repeat my past blogging mistakes. At least, I will try not to. That means no aimless blogging. No riffing on any and all personal experiences and stuffing them under the umbrella of “blog” and clicking publish. Okay, in all ..read more

Summer is flying by! I can’t believe it’s already almost September. A lot has happened in the last month. We moved. We also had two sets of family come to visit us at our new place. Wesley is getting settled in just fine. He is really enjoying the new hood. Hard not to love new trails and mountains to explore. On the blog side of things, within the past month I’ve achieved: 1. Starting dogfluential (yay!) I finally took the plunge and made dogfluential live. If you’re here, wondering what the heck you are reading, maybe this interview I did will clear things up? If that doesn’t, try this. 2. P ..read more

Dog Insurance: do I love my dog too much?

Not long ago, I read a Facebook conversation about pet insurance where one person said “You’re better off saving the $20 / month and saving for your pet so that you can pay their medical bills if they ever come up.” This was followed by a long stream of replies from people offering anecdotes about how pet insurance saved them financially and gave them several extra years of life with their dog: “I NEVER regretted paying the monthly insurance cost because I knew that I would never have to say “no” to something which could help her. If she hadn’t had insurance, I would have lost her by age 5 ins ..read more

After countless hours and many early mornings before work spent reading the super awesome dog blogs out there, I figured “why not join in on the fun?” It’s a perfect way to fuse my love for my puppo and blogging, and add a little fun and freshness to the dogfluencer//dog jobber//dog blogger world. I’m a 30 year old staff member at a University who’s just trying to figure out how to spend more time with his dog (and husband) in the mountains of North Carolina. Am I a dog expert – nope. Am I a blog expert – nope. But I’m ready to get my hands dirty and hope you are too. Get ready to suspend a li ..read more

We’re back from a nice short hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We had a great time outdoors and exploring new trails in our new hometown. We arrived at the trail head around 8:30. By then the sun was already burning off some of the morning fog, but the temps were in the mid-60s, and we had plenty of tree coverage on most of the trail. For the first hour or so of the hike, it was basically just us. We hooked Wesley up to his harness and let him explore without the gentle leader. The difference in his behavior between the two restraints is amazing. With the harness, he goes back to his old comm ..read more

How I chose a pet blog niche and chose a domain

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and researching over the past few weeks about my new pet site. As I’ve mentioned previously, I won’t be divulging the domain name of the pet site I’m developing (but that may change in the future). Instead, I want to share some of the steps that I’ve taken during the beginning phase of creating a site from scratch in this blogging niche. For starters, I did not buy an existing domain. In case you are wondering what that means, it’s simply that I created a new unique domain. This is compared with purchasing a so-called aged domain, or just a domain that someone ..read more

Can You Afford a Dog? 11 Dog Care Costs to Consider

Having a dog has changed my life. All you dog lovers out there know what I’m talking about. I don’t even have to list off the various positive benefits (but I will): love, companionship, happiness, responsibility, and a general sense of unspoken “in it togetherness,” to name a few. Admittedly, I didn’t fully think through all of the expenses before getting Wesley. Dog care costs were on my mind, but I didn’t do any research. No blogs. No asking friends or family. Nothing. In all honesty, we did delay welcoming a dog home until we felt like finances were stable. But other than our own experienc ..read more

Interview With a Dog Blogger

I sat down with myself this morning, and I was kind enough to answer some questions for the reader: Me: Who is DJ? That’s me I’m 30 years old and live in North Carolina. Happily married with one energetic Springer Spaniel, Wesley. We’re also “expecting” – with another furry doggo due to arrive to our household in November. I grew up in the southern US and was going to school to become a pediatrician. That didn’t happen (sorry mom!). My work career has mostly been at a University. While very fulfilling, I’d rather spend time with my dog. So, I’ve been freelancing and blogging, and exploring th ..read more

Why I Started Blogging During a Pandemic

Should I start blogging during a pandemic? That’s the question I found myself asking just a few months ago. And if you’re reading this, it’s because I’ve answered my own question. When the pandemic hit, I had no idea that I would turn to blogging. But I realized that writing is something that I really enjoy doing. I decided to start blogging here so that I could have an outlet. Mainly, to keep track of dog related projects that I’m working on, but also to share dog-related news from my life.  The pandemic upended any normal-ness of my work schedule (circa 2019). And in the fluidity I’m fi ..read more
