"Marjorie Prime" (2017) serves up a Prime Cut of Acting Prowess
Talk about your acting tour de force. The super strange sci-fi domestic drama "Marjorie Prime" practically redefines the term.
Veteran stalwarts Jon Hamm, Tim Robbins, Geena Davis and (the great and egregiously underappreciated) Lois Smith invest their considerable collective acumen into this freaky fable exploring the preservation of memory and the perception of identity. At times befuddling and stagy (the film is based on a play, after all), yet at once consistently compelling, "Marjorie Prime" is ce ..read more

“Skinamarink” (2023): You likely won’t Like it
Think “The Amityville Horror” on a shoestring budget with intentionally grainy video and vintage cartoons on VHS set to jaunty old-timey jazz and you’ve got the confoundingly creepy skull-screw “Skinamarink”.
Is this a house haunted beyond the unspeakably heinous? Or could it be a little boy’s nightmare playing out as horrifying illusion?
Either way, or even neither way, I can’t say that I recommend this fantastically frustrating cum freakishly fascinating fable of a family in the grips of gruesome unseen.
There are about a hundred other inter ..read more

“Betrayed”, “Den Største Forbrytelsen”,(2020): The Darkest of Days
“Betrayed” draws from the true story of the Norwegian boxer Charles Braude and his family, who were persecuted, arrested and murdered by the Nazis during World War II. Appallingly, the entire process was carried out with the full participation of the Norwegian government and the state police, who joined in cold collaboration with Adolf Hitler to help exact a madman’s barbaric plan to exterminate all Jews in Europe.
“Betrayed” opens as an engaging look into the close-knit Norwegian Braude family as they actually lived, wo ..read more

“The Burning Sea” (“Nordsjøen”), (2022): The Price of Oil
In the North Atlantic off the Norwegian coast an oil drilling platform has gone down in spectacular fashion. As researchers scramble to determine what happened, they soon realize that this is only the beginning of something much more grave.
It has been written before on this film review blog that Norwegians love their disaster flicks. But this tenet probably stands in need of a little tweak. For a more apt assertion may be that Norwegians love flicks in which the disasters are wreaked by Mother Nature. And those in positions of authori ..read more
