What is Hedging? The Sleep Machine of Investing

Reducing the Chance of Wakeups! I remember when someone suggested we try white noise to help the baby sleep at night. She was about 5 weeks old at the time and was sleeping in her own crib next to our bed. Babies are noisy sleepers. They make all sorts of noise at night. The white noise was as helpful to us as it was to her. It seemed to drown out everything. Now we use it to help the next one sleep when we are staying with family. He’s an extremely light sleeper and it seems to help reduce the risk of him waking up because he heard someone walking around. It’s our little insurance to get a bi ..read more

Things New Investors Should NEVER Invest In

Keep it simple early on When I first started investing in my early 20s I didn’t even know what an ETF was. I’m going to be honest with you. I didn’t really even know what the stock market was. I had managed to save up some money during University. This was mostly due to two reasons: My parents helped me with tuition and books by saving money and investing for me when I was a kid (we are doing that now for our kids) I paid for my own housing, food and entertainment by working. 2nd and 3rd year I worked as a Residence Advisor on campus which paid me by giving me free board and food. I was also ..read more

What is an Initial Public Offering (IPO)?

An IPO is a Private Company Breaking Free of it’s Newborn Swaddle The one thing I remember from the baby class we attended (this was over four years ago now!) was how to swaddle a baby. Remember those awesome hospital blankets your newborn was wrapped in? It’s like they contained magic powers to make the baby comfy, warm and snug. Just seeing those blue stripes brings me back. Once they grew out of the receiving blankets, we moved to sleep sacks with Velcro flaps which helped keep baby swaddled. Worked like a charm until around 3-4 months of age when both kids became so strong they broke out ..read more

Did You Jump in the Market? Back in March during the height of the pandemic the stock market went sideways. Actually it went down. Way down. To many, that might have been a frightening moment. Watching your savings evaporate overnight is not an easy thing to do – and it is the reason many people never take the plunge into investing in the first place. However, if you didn’t sweat the drop and had some cash to invest, you would have done quite well for yourself. Here’s a look at the three mani market indexes to date: You can see based on the graph above that all three indexes (Nasdaq = Purple ..read more

Identifying the Jolly Jumper of Stocks The Jolly Jumper was a hit for both kids. It’s a life saver – an extra set of hands while making dinner or a much needed break when you need 15 minutes to check Instagram (you know you’ve done it). Both kids loved it and Baby P still enjoys jumping away at seven months. Did you know that the Jollly Jumper was invented in Canada? Olivia Poole created the first Jolly Jumper in 1910. Living in Manitoba she created a similar swing for her kids but the concept wasn’t patented until 1957 for mass distribution. The first Jolly Jumpers were sold for $10.98. Now ..read more

Remember, the Stock Market is Driven by Investor Emotion and Sentiment I can finally write again! To say the last four months were difficult would be an understatement! However, things here in Ontario are looking up. Just last week, our daughter’s day care reopened. Even though I’m home on maternity leave, we opted to send her back to daycare a couple of days a week. She was pumped! It was so good to see her back with her friends and chat with her teachers. With daycare back in the picture, I have two days a week (during nap time) to write again. I’m going to make the best of it. For those who ..read more

Are We in a Bull Trap?

The 4 Month Sleep Regression of the Market I just realized I’m going through two similar life events at the same time. Two completely different events and circumstances but their characteristics are so similar it makes me laugh. The dreaded 4 month sleep regression and a potential bull market trap! It is uncanny how similar the two events are. We hit our stride nicely the first three months with Baby P; got into a good groove of getting up in the morning, day care drop off and even a daily shower! It was start to feel routine. Then COVID-19 and the dreaded 4 month sleep regression hit. 30 minu ..read more

I’ll keep this post short and sweet because you, like me probably only have 3 minutes of free time to read this between keeping up with working from home and entertaining the kids. Recessions of Christmas Past I’ve been reading a lot of articles these days theorizing we are about to enter and experience the worst recession since the Great Depression. Here are some of the articles I’ve come across just today: Bank of Canada unleashes billions to aid economy in what will likely be most severe recession ever Statistics Canada for first time ever releases GDP data early – and it’s the worst on re ..read more
