Halcyon Days - Baltic Beer For Pure Baltic Weather

A deeply rich and full bodied baltic porter, Halcyon Days (7.2% ABV) is our latest dark beer. Maybe it’s ironic that we're releasing a beer called ‘Halcyon Days’ —  supposedly a period when the gods brought calm, windless, winter days according to Greek mythology— just as Scotland’s east coast has been hammered by successive storms… Halcyon Days is a high-strength, warming porter, rich with smooth, dark, roasted flavours and aromas: the perfect beer to be enjoyed on such dark, winter nights when it's blowing a hoolie outside. Our inspiration came out of such weather, when a ..read more

Thinking about a cold, crisp, refreshing, classic Pilsner to have in between all those weird drinks you’ll be offered at Christmas?  Our Bohemian Pilsner (4.5% ABV) is a classic Czech pilsner style that won ‘Silver’ in Best Pilsner category at last week’s Scottish Beer Awards. Featuring Saaz, a noble hop, Bellfield Pilsner is pale with a light body, background bitterness and gentle floral tones leading to a soft finish.  If that wasn’t enough to whet your taste buds,  Keith our brewer is busy filling 5-litre mini kegs of  it, fresh from our conditioning tanks.  Pilsner ..read more

Lockdown blog #6: Can or bottle?

When did beer drinkers fall in love with the can rather than the bottle? You need to go back 90 years. Up to this point, beer had only been available in barrels or in glass or heavy stoneware bottles. (In fact the history buffs among you, might like to know that bits of stoneware beer bottles still regularly wash up on our local beach here in Portobello, Edinburgh, sometimes with the maker's name or beer name still visible!). The shift from bottle to can started in the USA, when a Virginia-based brewery became the first to commercially package beer into cans, in the 1930s. At th ..read more

New, single-hop beer: Jex-Blake Mosaic IPA
Bellfield Brewery » Gluten Free Beer

We’ve got a new beer coming out this weekend in mini cask and on draught for take-aways from our taproom. It’s a 5.6% single-hop IPA, a luscious, golden beer with juicy, tropical fruit aromas of pineapple and mango, and pine and citrus flavours, thanks to the Mosaic® hops we’ve used. Sometimes called “Citra on Steroids” Mosaic is a patented variety invented by the Hop Breeding Company (who are also responsible for renowned varieties such as Citra and Simcoe). It is also a relatively young hop variety, having been released in 2012. Since then, its success has been pretty spectacular and Mosaic ..read more

Lockdown Blog #5: Hops

Hops. We’ve become a bit obsessed with the hops we’re growing in pots outside the office windows, just nicknamed “Spud and Renton” by one of our customers. But though we’re loving seeing the plants grow – sometimes by as much as three centimetres a day - this variety is not what most people think of as the ‘real’ deal. It's a specially-bred, dwarf or hedgerow variety called "Prima Donna" that we’re growing in our beer garden primarily for decoration and shade, though we will definitely try brewing with it once mature, because this tiny hop apparentl ..read more

Lockdown Blog #3 - Keg or Cask beer?
Bellfield Brewery » Gluten Free Beer

Keg or Cask? Which do you prefer? It’s a bit like asking whether you like salt and sauce on your chips or if you prefer salt and vinegar. Each has its strong advocates. And there’s plenty of people who are not entirely sure of the difference between cask and keg beer and if one is supposed to be the ‘real thing’ while the other isn’t quite authentic. Cask beer was considered to be the connoisseur’s choice in the UK, but over the years it became less popular with publicans, as it has a shorter shelf life than kegged beer and it went into decline. In 1971, CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) was s ..read more

Lockdown Blog #2 - Dreaming of draught beer

Have you been dreaming of a pint of draught beer, fresh from the cask? Well it might be a very long time before pubs, taprooms and beer gardens open again, but don’t despair! We recently launched our long-awaited ‘barrels of joy’; dinky 5 litre mini casks (8/9 pints) filled with our award-winning Lawless Village IPA or Session Ale, fresh from the brewhouse here in Abbeyhill, Edinburgh. Stock will vary due to high demand and whilst we sold out of the first batch of IPA almost immediately, there's still plenty of Session Ale. Our brewer Keith has been busy filling more, and is working on some r ..read more

Bloated stomach? Feeling tired all the time? You may be Coeliac: Coeliac Awareness Week May 2019
Bellfield Brewery » Gluten Free Beer
by Giselle Dye

Coeliac Awareness Week runs from 13-20 May and as an exclusively gluten-free brewery, the Week always reminds us of why we set up Bellfield in the first place. It began as a conversation in an Edinburgh pub between two craft-beer loving friends who had both been diagnosed with coeliac disease and couldn’t find a gluten-free beer they liked. Grief stricken at the prospect of life-long abstention from pies, crisps, chips and especially beer, they got their thirsty heads together and came up with the solution – they would brew their own. Craft Beer For All became the mission and Born of Grief, Br ..read more
