Each year I start a 100 day project that starts on January 1st and ends on my birthday, which happens to fall on the 100th day of the year. My first 100 day project was Resonance in 2018, and I have done several other 100 day projects since then. For 2022 I decided to explore the use of stripes in piecing. In this post from January, I share the first quarter of the project process. Today, I get to share the final result! I recognized going into this project that it was most likely going to be a busy design. The center unit of the quilt includes stripes that finish at 1/2″ wide, so as I worked ..read more

2020 was the year that almost everything was canceled, but I did have one phenomenal experience that summer- An artist residency on Mackinac Island in Michigan. As part of the residency, each participant donates a piece of their Mackinac inspired work to the art museum on the island. Since this quilt is now at it’s forever home, it won’t be seen at any shows, so I am excited that I can now share the finished piece with you! Mackinac Island is situated in the Great Lakes between the Northern and Southern sections of Michigan. There are no cars permitted on the island, so you arrive by ferry an ..read more

In 2020 I did three 100 day projects, and at that point a daily project had become a major part of my daily routine. As QuiltCon Together (the virtual version of QuiltCon) approached, I thought it would be fun to do a quilt counting down the days to the big event. For the majority of the 100 days, I created a pieced equilateral triangle each day. The piecing is done semi-improvisationally. I made up the composition of each triangle block as I went, but I used rulers and even incorporated 1/8″ wide sliver inserts in most blocks. I frequently select a dominant color for the quilts I create, an ..read more

Each year the Modern Quilt Guild issues a fabric challenge for their annual show, QuiltCon. Every year I say I’m going to participate, and sometimes I actually manage to complete something! This year the MQG teamed up with Windham Fabrics to use their Artisan cottons. The challenge included four fabrics, of which we were required to use at least three, and a set of optional neutrals. I wasn’t initially sure what I wanted to do, but I ordered the challenge fabrics and a black neutral to start with. The challenge fabric is woven with one color in the warp of the weave and another color in the w ..read more

Earlier this year my local Modern Quilt Guild, The Central Ohio MQG, issued a member challenge to create a two color quilt. This challenge was a little different than many two color challenges because we were permitted to embrace all values of the colors we selected. I ultimately selected blue and turquoise as my colors, but it took me awhile to get there! Initially, I intended to keep it simple with two colors and no value shift, but as the design evolved, so did my color plan. I have been wanting to make a red and white quilt, and I thought this would be a great project for that color schem ..read more

This year’s block of the month is my best pattern yet- at least I think it is! This is my third year designing a block of the month for Dabble and Stitch in Columbus, Ohio, and the animal theme is proving to be a hit! UPDATE: The Zoo Family Portrait Quilt Pattern is now available exclusively as a PDF download. Purchase the Zoo Family Portrait pattern here! The quilt is designed using photographs I have taken at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium over the course of four years.  If I was lucky, each zoo visit would yield one or two good animal photos, and I ultimately ended up with about two do ..read more

Festive Baubles

I made a Christmas quilt this year, and I only missed finishing it for Christmas by two days! Maybe I’ll just consider it 364 days early for next year!  Festive Baubles is a reinterpretation of the Baubles quilt I made a few years ago.  A lot of people really loved this quilt, and wanted a pattern for it.  The initial version had areas of the construction that were too challenging for the result, so I set out to create a design that has a similar aesthetic with a more user friendly construction.  The pattern isn’t complete yet, but I’m hoping to do a Christmas in July sew a ..read more
