People with disabilities are often on the receiving end of help, but at the Food Bank, many groups of disabled volunteers love lending a hand to help others. One group we are excited to welcome every week comes from Ala Costa Centers, a nonprofit with programs supporting youth through adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. According to Ala Costa staff member, Katia Antonova, their volunteers have been told directly or indirectly that they could only do so much throughout their lives, reinforcing their limitations. But not at ACCFB. “Going to places like the Food Bank reminds ..read more

WITH Xochi, Sustainability Program Manager For the record, state your name and what you do here at ACCFB Hey ya’all! I’m Xochi and I’m the Sustainability Program Manager at ACCFB. I, along with my team, oversee our Food Recovery Program (“FRP”) which takes extra food leftover at grocery stores and other businesses and makes sure it gets to agency partners (food pantries, etc.) to give to the community. Sounds like a big deal. How much food are we talking about? Last year our program recovered over 10 million pounds of food. We were very excited to reach 8 digits for the first time! …They’re Alameda Food Bank It’s a common confusion. There’s Alameda County Community Food Bank (us) which is the central hub of hunger relief serving the entire county. And there’s Alameda Food Bank — a dedicated part of our network of 400-or-so agencies — which is a critical partner serving the City of Alameda. …If only we had a nickel for every time one of our volunteers called us from AFB! Founded in 1977, the Alameda Food Bank served more than 3,100 households last year, and averaged nearly 320 people visiting their distribution each day — a 35 percent increase from the year before. Linda and her grandson Matteo. When Covid hit, Linda Milanese saw how people were struggling and decided to do something about it. Since she was a child, she loved weaving and thought she could make use of her hobby during lockdown. She went online, ordered a small loom, and began making colorful potholders to sell. Linda has been donating 100% of the proceeds to the Food Bank. “The potholders have been a family affair,” said Linda. “My daughter helped me put together a website to sell them. My grandson, who was in sixth grade, would give them funny names to tease me about my age like, ‘c ..read more

Cindy Carrico “I can’t solve every problem. In fact, there’s very few I can solve. But if we all give to the Food Bank, I do think we can solve one of the most basic problems of all — hunger.” Cindy Carrico still recalls a boy she knew in elementary school. Back then, she noticed that he often had only a hard-boiled egg for lunch — or sometimes nothing at all. “My mother was always sending me to school with more than I could eat, so I’d share part of my sandwiches with him,” she says. Cindy says she shares the story now to demonstrate that even small acts can make a big difference. “That ..read more

By Ingrid Becker, Associate Director, Community Engagement Two is better than one, or so it seems for ACCFB volunteers.  This Valentine’s Day we asked some of our married couples and partners to share what brought them to ACCFB together. “It’s a fun thing to do together,” says Jennifer Banker who has been volunteering at ACCFB with her husband Steve since 2018. “The way the food bank here is run, the logistics, the friendly people, it’s always wonderful to work here,” adds Steve. Steve’s Oakland real estate company participated in annual food drives for years. Now that the Alamo couple a ..read more
