SUNNY COVE SEA KAYAKING IS OFFICIALLY CHANGING NAMES
Sunny Cove
by Danny Mueninck

When John Page first started Sunny Cove Sea Kayaking (SCSK), he named his company after Sunny Cove on Fox Island where he would run trips and spend his summers living. Many moons have passed since John lived and ran trips from Sunny Cove. John currently lives and runs his operation just south of Seward on Lowell Point. As SCSK has continued to change and grow over the years, we have started a discussion on if it is time to change the SCSK name brand to reflect the direction the company has taken over the past decade. And so it is with great excitement that after many hours of brainstorming and ..read more

Grateful, a few days late
Sunny Cove

To be clear, I’ve been grateful the entire time, it’s just the post that’s a few days late. ? Whoops. Isn’t it odd we have just one day of thankfulness, immediately followed by a day of full on consumerism? Personally, I’m with REI…#optout, although Amazon threw a wrench in that one by hosting a Black Friday football game midday. ? I think it’s important to try to be grateful as often as possible, even on the days that are hard. Anyhow, my favorite day the whole weekend is Small Business Saturday. The Seward Chamber of Commerce does a wonderful job of hyping up the day, and hosts a scavenger ..read more

More Grateful Each Year
Sunny Cove

I’m sitting at my desk, watching early morning snowfall (well, mid-morning…sunrise is around 9:00 am these days) and thinking about how lucky I am to be where I am now. Luck coupled with determination with a hearty helping of others helping me along has brought me to where I had hoped to be for more than a decade. In 2006 I joined the Sunny Cove team as the Day Trips Coordinator. Although I wasn’t new to Alaska or guiding, it turned out I was as green as they come when it comes to understanding kayaking and the Pacific Ocean. Through a lot of patience and training, I learned a lot and fell in ..read more

October Update
Sunny Cove
by Stephanie Millane

I have to admit, it’s too quiet around here. Seward is buttoning up for the upcoming winter, and the pace is slowing down significantly.  I often don’t know what to do with myself this time of year. The go, go, go of summer ends so abruptly that I often find myself spinning my wheels in October, trying to figure out how to slow, slow, slow.  Where is everyone… Now’s the time of year when I also begin to make updates and changes. Stay tuned for new looks on our website and social media! And, we’re taking reservations for 2023! Procrastinators…don’t do it, we’re filling many of our m ..read more

Wait…what? It’s September already? But…HOW?
Sunny Cove
by Stephanie Millane

Every year, I’m blown away by how time works in Seward. This is truly a magical place, where one minute it can feel like it’s going to take forever for summer to come, but then in a blink of an eye, it’s over. Just about 15 minutes ago I was marveling about how it was almost the 4th of July, and then BAM! It’s September! I’m convinced August was just one really long day of rain, contributing to the illusion. But, I can’t deny fall is upon us. The sun is rising later, making for some spectacular colors on the clouds. The bears have been in my neighborhood fattening up on berries (and sleeping ..read more

Anxious About Kayaking?
Sunny Cove
by Stephanie Millane
1M ago
Does the idea of sea kayaking make you or someone you know feel anxious? Anxiety is super common for first time kayakers, but there is no reason to fear joining a guided sea kayaking trip. Most of our nervous kayakers feel a bit better after meeting our experienced guides and going through our pre-trip orientation. Almost all first-timers start with a few kayaking jitters, but find the experience amazing after just a few short minutes on the water. Our stable two-person kayaks are specifically designed for stability on the ocean. At more than 18 feet long, they feel very comfortable and are e ..read more
