The Extraction movies are some of life’s simple pleasures. Undemanding, action-packed, featuring a man called Tyler Rake blowing stuff up, shooting people, and punching people through an array of interesting camera angles. They are perfectly pitched to crack open a beer with. The original Extraction landed in 2020, and was the first major streaming release of the pandemic period. Critics were predictably sniffy, but audiences loved it. It was massive. It became the most streamed movie on Netflix for a long while. The sequel landed in 2023 and also went huge, while actually winning over the cr ..read more

The biggest scalp of the #MeToo movement, the man who arguably started it all, Harvey Weinstein, has had one of his convictions overturned. The New York Court of Appeals has overturned the 2020 conviction on felony sex crime charges in a 4-3 ruling. The report in The Associated Press says that the court found that the judge in Weinstein’s original trial had shown prejudice and improper rulings. This is because that judge allowed women to testify about allegations that were not part of the case in question. As such it became more of a referendum on ol’ Harv’s general sleaziness, rather than ta ..read more

The story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, two Cuban immigrants who launched themselves to international musical stardom, was adapted into a Broadway jukebox musical in 2015. I’m going to say this, Clue is a very underrated comedy. You have a great cast, great comedy, and several endings, all in one movie. I saw it again recently and it is still a lot of fun. But being a middle-aged white man, means I’m not allowed to enjoy it anymore, so a remake is coming. It will also be a TV show, rather than a movie, just to prolong the agony. Sony and Tristar have made a deal with Hasbro for the film, and TV rights to the Clue boardgame with the Hasbro Heads of Films and TV, Gabriel Marano and Zev Foreman, saying: “Sony is the perfect partner to adapt a property as culturall ..read more

In today’s desert of movies, now and then, an oasis appears on the horizon. Something to look forward to. Something to aim towards. It sounded like Cleopatra was one such movie. A new movie about Cleopatra had been in the works for many years to tell the story of the iconic Egyptian queen and her quest for power. It sounded quite thrilling. Political machinations, sex, assassinations, what is not to like? Brian Helgeland was one of the most recent writers brought in to work on the script. It all sounded very juicy. Helgeland said in an interview: “I was the very first writer on Cleopatra whe ..read more

A remake of the iconic 1980 comedy 9 to 5 is on the horizon. Jennifer Aniston is set to produce, and it is a reimagining for 20th Century Studios.
