by Greek Giant With yesterday’s 8-2 loss to the Mets to end the three-game series on a sour note the Giants are now 0-5 in Blake Snell’s spot in the rotation so far this season. The problem with this stat is that Snell has only pitched in three of those games. Yesterday he was placed on the Injured List with a strained Adductor muscle and is expected to miss at least two weeks. What more could go wrong with Snell’s tenure in San Francisco? Remember Sean Manaea? He of the big black wavy hair? He was the Giants spot starter and long man out of the bullpen last year, a season in which he was thor ..read more

Webb Dominates Again, This Time Against the Mets

by Greek Giant Logan Webb Is on Fire The Giants won last night’s game against the New York Mets 5-1 after getting shut down completely through four innings by Luis Severino who retired the first twelve batters he faced. Fortunately for the boys from San Francisco Logan Webb matched and exceeded Severino’s effort pitching eight shutout innings, earning his third win of the year and lowering his ERA to 2.33 while throwing 106 pitches with 75 being strikes. Webb’s performance was nothing less than exhilarating. His change-up was just downright unhittable, mirroring the motion and direction of his ..read more

Keaton’s a Winner Versus Mets

by Greek Giant Keaton Winn Excels Keaton Winn pitched six super innings, dominant innings in which he allowed only a solo homer, to earn his second win of the year against three losses. The 5-2 win gave the Giants momentum after a loss yesterday and propels the team forward into the series against a Mets team that has often given them fits in years pst. In fact this season, after an 0-5 start the Mets had won 12 of 16 heading into last night’s game. Winn’s split finger fastball was dynamite for most of the night, the exception being a mis-placed splitter floating in the inside corner hammered ..read more

Giants Do the Splits Aganist the DBacks

by Greek Giant I want to begin this post by saying though I disagree with Bob Melvin’s decision to bring the infield in with one out and runners on second and third in the top of the sixth in a game with the Giants leading 2-1, I can see why he did it. I don’t agree with it and it cost the Giants two runs when Gabriel Moreno singled up the middle just past a drawn-in Thairo Estrada to put the DBacks ahead for good. The play before was more meaningful. With Pederson on second after a double and Gabriel Moreno on first after an infield single deep in the hole that Nick Ahmed could not corral, Wa ..read more

Snelly Cat, Snelly Cat, what are they paying you?  Snelly Cat, Snelly Cat, it’s a rip off! ?–Lyrics by MrLefty, tune from “Friends” (video at the bottom)   by DrLefty The greatest thing about the baseball season is that there’s a game just about everyday, the soothing friendly backdrop of spring and summer. Snelly Cat Hat. Photo credit: MrLefty   The worst thing about the baseball season is that there’s another game the next day, so even when your team has their best game of the year, you can’t savor it for very ..read more

Logan Webb: Snake Stomper

by Greek Giant Logan Webb and the Giants beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 last night in what was for both parties, the most impressive performance of this young season. At one point Webb retired 19 straight DBacks in a dominant effort that saw him induce many ground ball outs and outs on weak contact to go along with his five strike outs in seven shutout innings of work that saw him surrender only two hits and one walk. In fact those two hits came in the first two batters of the game. From there Webb cruised to a performance so dominant that even though it was a pitcher’s duel until the eight ..read more

by Greek Giant Stop the Presses! The Giants won a game in Miami after trailing 3-0. Miami is where Giants seasons travel to die, just like the nation’s retirees. Only, the Giants (and their fans) have to witness these deaths year-in, year-out! The Giants have not won a series in Miami since 2016! I can recall many ugly memories for the Giants in Miami going back to 1997, 2003 and later. Things may be changing however…Last night the Giants scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead and keep it, winning 4-3 and getting Kyle Harrison, the win. The big hits came with two o ..read more

What’s That Snell?

by Greek Giant I was very much looking forward to yesterday’s game against the Rays. The Giants had just celebrated a lopsided win in St. Petersburg the day before and were playing for a series win on the road, which would have been their first of the year. Blake Snell was scheduled to make his second start and I had all kinds of positive exciting feelings as I sat down to watch. NOPE! Instead the Giants made a mess out of this game. EDITOR”S NOTE: THIS is going to get ugly. Let me begin with Blake Snell. I am a big Snell fan. He is, despite his flaws (lack of command, failing to finish off hi ..read more

Putrid Baseball 2024

by DrLefty It was just under a year ago that I published the 2023 edition of Putrid Baseball*, which promptly shamed the Giants into playing better, an effect that lasted until…well, until it didn’t. Since talking about yesterday’s game or the season in general doesn’t sound very appealing right now, I thought it might be “fun” to go back and revisit what I said in my last “putrid” column, compare that version of the Giants to this year’s iteration so far, and speculate on what the future, by which I mean the rest of the 2024 season, might hold.   2023 Putridity Is “putridity” even a word ..read more
