Peaches at roadside stands and in the supermarket are a sure sign of spring and summer, but this year, that sign may be harder to find might just be a wee bit more expensive. Last December’s freezing temperatures coupled with spring frosts and then lots of warmth have effected a large percentage of the South Carolina and Georgia peach crops.
According to reports, agriculture experts are estimating around 50% of peaches in South Carolina have been lost this season, with Georgia peaches at around an 80% loss.

Camelot Farms on St. Helena Island has announced that it has been purchased by Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort and plans to add it to the list of amenities offered to resort guests and residents, and has issued a release via their Facebook page on Friday, May 5th.

One of the special things about living in the Lowcountry is our seafood, and Southern Living magazine is giving out a heaping portion of love to the Shrimp Shack on St. Helena Island as its readers poll has included the tiny island seafood spot among the Top 10 in all of South Carolina.

A slightly below average hurricane season is in the forecast for 2023 according to the prediction issued last week by scientists at Colorado State University. The prediction for the upcoming season says there will be at least 13 named storms and 6 hurricanes; 2 of which will be at a Category 3 strength or higher.
An average season normally has 14 named storms, around 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

The City of Beaufort will remove diseased and damaged Washingtonia palm trees from the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park this week. The work is being done at the Circle of Palms, where five trees are being removed; the west entrance of the park, where two trees are being removed, and the amphitheater, where 10 trees are being removed.
These trees have been impaired by a combination of fungal infection and freeze damage and either cannot be saved or are in severe decline, according to board-certified arborist Michael Murphy, who is contracted by the City to advise on tree issues.
