Hello Readers, Trust you are doing well. Today, I am going to discuss an interesting issue we encountered in one of our 4-node RAC production databases. We observed a session spike that lasted for a couple of minutes and then resolved itself automatically. As this incident only caused brief disruption in a few application services, our customer requested a Root Cause Analysis for the event. Our initial analysis revealed that multiple sessions were executing a particular INSERT statement on a table, contributing significantly to the session spike. These sessions were experiencing various types ..read more

Dear Readers, Trust you are doing well. In my last post, I focused on RAT preprocessing. Now, let’s dive into the RAT replay process, which is executed on the pre-production or target system to simulate the captured workload. Once a workload is captured and preprocessed, it can be replayed multiple times on a replay system running the same version of Oracle Database using guaranteed restore points. Before replaying a workload, the application data state on the replay system must be logically equivalent to that of the capture system at the start of workload capture. This ensures minimal replay ..read more

Dear Readers, Trust you are doing well. In my last post, I foucssed on RAT capture process. In this post, I’ll delve into the process of preprocessing RAT workloads. This post will provide insights into key considerations, best practices, and essential MOS notes for RAT preprocessing. WHAT IS PREPROCESSING?: After a workload is captured and setup of the test system is complete, the captured data must be preprocessed. This is done by running DBMS_WORKLOAD_REPLAY.PROCESS_CAPTURE Preprocessing a captured workload creates all necessary metadata for replaying the workload. It needs to be done only o ..read more

Dear Readers, Trust you are doing well. In my last post, I foucssed on overview of RAT testing process. In this post, I’ll delve into the process of capturing RAT workloads. This post will provide insights into key considerations, best practices, implementation strategies, and essential MOS notes for RAT capture. WHAT IS CAPTURE? To initiate Database Replay, the initial step involves capturing a production workload. This process entails recording all requests originating from external clients directed towards the Oracle Database. Upon enabling workload capture, the Oracle Database meticulously ..read more

Dear Readers, Trust you are doing well. Today I am going to write about interesting issue I faced recently on one of critical 3 node RAC DB, wherein one of DB instance crashed & while it was rejoining cluster another instance crashed. This situation created a lot of panic in customer’s environment as 2 instances were crashed one after another during peak hours. Once all isntance were back up and running, we started investigating from available diagnostic data. While we had complete evidence of instance 1 crashed due to interconnect communication issue, symptoms for second instance failure ..read more
