Austin's Best Dive Bars

Originally published March 2019, this article has been updated. As you may or may not be aware, the slogan for this little website is “from low brow to high class.” I am a woman of many different facets, and while I truly love a gorgeous, decadent chef’s tasting menu, I also have a trash heart and love hanging out at dingy dive bars. And, I don’t mean like hipster dive bars (cough cough, The White Horse), we’re talking some surly men are only cracking open bottles of Miller High Life and there’s nothin’ on the jukebox later than 1979, type of places. While Austin’s dives are maybe becoming som ..read more

10 Best Burgers in Austin

Originally published March 2019. This post has been edited and updated. If you've seen the Big Bite Out logo, you'll notice it's a hamburger. That's because hamburgers are truly my absolute favorite dish in the whole wide world. And, of course, once people know that they immediately ask, "So, what's your favorite burger in Austin?" Here are the seven that truly never steer me wrong.  First things first, I like a pretty boring burger. I don't want it super fancy. I don't want a fried egg on it. I want an amazing patty (medium rare, please), great cheese, an impeccable bun, and the usual ma ..read more

My 6 Favorite New Austin Restaurants of 2019
Big Bite Out

It’s been a weird year of eating, and I’ve finally put on my thinking cap to decide which new Austin restaurants impressed me the most in 2019. These are the absolute best of the best but rather the restaurants I WANT to go back to. So, let’s dive right in! Oseyo First on this list has to be Oseyo, simply because I’ve been back four times already, and I’ve had an incredible meal every single time. The space is warm and inviting. The cocktail program is great, and the food is delicious as hell. Korean food is so homey sometimes, not quite lending itself to the more refined dining experience, bu ..read more

The 10 Most Delicious Things I Ate in 2019

This year is almost over, and I can hardly believe it. It’s truly been a whirlwind. I’ve honestly been so incredibly busy this year that it’s been a little difficult for me to stay on top of new restaurants in Austin. But, I’ve gotten to try some—when I’m not too busy sticking to my tried-and-true favorites or ordering Uber Eats delivery while watching Baby Yoda light up my life. Also, I’ve had some time for travel this year—heading to Louisville, Kentucky, for some bourbon tasting and some delicious eats, as well as exploring Washington Wine Country, eating my way through New Orleans (for lik ..read more

Comedor is as Delicious as it is Gorgeous

For a while there, new restaurant openings in Austin were getting truly ridiculous. It was becoming super difficult to keep up with all the eateries popping up all over town. And, we were developing a problem with the substance not matching the style (I won’t name names here, but I’m not shy about voicing my opinions about restaurants whose food and service don’t live up to its “Instagram-worthy” decor). Although it took me waaaaaay too long to visit Comedor, Philip Speer’s sleek upscale Mexican restaurant on Colorado Street, thankfully—thankfully!—the experience lived up to the hype and the s ..read more

Order Everything at Oseyo

OK, OK. So, I’ve been on a little bit of a hiatus this summer. The company I work for opened up a brand new hotel in May (the East Austin Hotel in case you’re unaware!), and my summer has been INSANE. I even needed a root canal for an infected tooth! Needless to say, there wasn’t a whole lot of time to try out new eats and drinks, but I have found myself at a new East Austin eatery TWICE in the past couple of months—it is THAT delicious. Oseyo is sort of an upscale-ish Korean spot, but it’s actually really affordable. The most expensive thing on the menu is around $25, but you get A LOT OF FOO ..read more

Y’all sick of hearing me wax poetic about Washington wine yet? Sorry, not sorry! Way back in March, I was treated to an amazing trip provided by Washington State Wine, and I’m proud to announce that it’s the Travel Pick in the June issue of Tribeza magazine! Yay! While I previous talked about how delicious the wines are in Eastern Washington, in this travel piece I talk about where to go, stay, eat, and sip in this gorgeous part of Washington State. Seriously, I will take you through an awesome road trip starting in Walla Walla, Washington that then goes to Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, Ya ..read more

Prior to my whirlwind Washington Wine Country tour, I was tasked with writing some blurbs on Texas Hill Country wineries for Austin Monthly. Since I had just celebrated my birthday with a wine tour bus, I was totally game to do the hard research. While you can read the full list of the 20 Best Hill Country Wineries over at austinmonthly.com, below is the list of the wineries I visited: Duchman WineryLove this place in Driftwood! I go quite often. Gorgeous grounds—eat pasta next door at Trattoria Lisina! Driftwood Estate Winery I’ll be very honest—I don’t LOOOOOOOVE the wines here. But this spo ..read more

This Mint Julep Puts a Twist on a Classic for Your Kentucky Derby Party

The fastest two minutes in sports are just around the corner, y’all! If you recall, I visited Louisville, KY, earlier this year, and I instantly fell in love with the city, especially its bourbons! I mean, who wouldn’t, right? Well, I also went to the Kentucky Derby Museum and toured Churchill Downs, which was incredibly interesting, even without a race going on. So, needless to say, you know I’m going to be donning some big hat on May 4th and cheering on one of my favorite four-legged friends during this year’s Kentucky Derby, but the race just ain’t complete without a mint julep in hand. Why You Should be Drinking Washington State Wines
Big Bite Out

*Disclaimer: While this is, IN NO WAY, sponsored by Washington State Wine, I was treated to a complimentary trip with accommodations, meals, and, of course, wine provided. * It has taken me two full weeks to write this. 1. Because when I got back to Austin after eight full days drinking Washington wine I had to dry out a little bit. And, 2. I drank SO MUCH incredible wine that it’s taken me this long to fully process it all. Let me back up a little bit. Since I’ve written food, wine, and travel articles pretty regularly in the past, I was pitched a trip touring Washington wine country from a P ..read more
