We’ve officially landed in Luna’s 27th country: Portugal! As you may already know, this is where the dog and I are putting down some roots for awhile, setting up a home base and learning a new language. We moved here sight unseen (yes, we know: we’re nuts). And I’m happy to say that I love the sunshine and the language and the people we’ve met along the way. I’m slightly less thrilled with the dog-friendliness here, but that’s mostly because places like Italy and Slovenia have spoiled me by being endlessly dog-friendly at every turn. So, what does it look like to travel with a dog in Portugal ..read more

Someone recently wrote to ask how Luna was doing. I haven’t seen her on the blog in awhile! They said. Is she okay? Which made me realize I’ve been remiss. While Luna did have some veterinary issues early in the year, she is doing very well indeed. Here’s what your favorite world-traveling, pillow-loving, freeloading pooch has been up to this year: The post Yes, this dog is living her best life appeared first on The Ramble ..read more

Croatia! In the past nine years of travel, it’s a place we’ve gone back to over and over again, spending months upon months exploring coastlines and islands, fortresses atop mountains, abandoned hotels, and the many hidden corners of Zagreb. After all that travel, I’m happy to say that Croatia is a pretty dog-friendly place. Not as dog-lovin as some of Western Europe, but much more dog-friendly than the US. Here are the deets: Dog-friendly housing in Croatia Finding dog-friendly rentals in Split, Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Plitvice Lakes, and pretty much everywhere else I’ve done has been incred ..read more

Since leaving the states to travel full-time, Luna the traveling pooch has been to 21 European countries (and 25 countries overall). Now, we still have plenty of Europe left to explore, but since we’ve been to so many places, I thought it might be useful to my fellow with-dog travelers if we did a bit of comparing and contrasting. Because some countries are definitely easier to navigate as a with-dog traveler than others, and it’s never a bad thing to know ahead of time what to expect. Below, I’ve ranked every European country we’ve gone to on a scale of one to five (along with an explanation ..read more

Quarantine got you down? If you’re a small dog, Luna the traveling pooch – a wise 10-year-old Yorkie-Schnauzer mix – has some suggestions for what you can do if you’re stuck indoors with your hoomans for the foreseeable future: 1. Sleep on your favorite cloud. 2. Sleep on your second favorite cloud. 3. Sleep on your favorite hooman. 4. Help your hooman with yoga. 5. Demand scratches. 6. “Help” the hoomans work. 7. Make the hoomans share their toys. 8. Destroy something cardboard like the fierce wolf you are. 9. Sleep on your third favorite cloud. 10. Demand more scratches from all pro ..read more

Latvia! It’s Luna the traveling pooch’s third new country visited in 2019. It’s off the beaten track. It’s ringed by sandy beaches and pine forests. And its capital is a cute little cobbled patchwork surrounded by a sprawling city along a river.   Should you visit Latvia? I vote yes. Our beach adventures and adorable country inns were a lovely vacation.  And how will Latvia be if you’re traveling with a dog in tow?  The answer is that Latvia is one of the most pet-friendly places we’ve been so far. Are dogs allowed in restaurants in Asia and Oceana?

Are dogs allowed in restaurants in Australia? Can they join you on a patio in Cambodia? What about cafes in South Korea? When you’re traveling the world with your dog, one of the big questions that comes up over and over again is this: Where can we eat? It seems like a straightforward question, but when you’re exploring a new city with your dog, sometimes grabbing lunch gets tricky. Because despite the fact that vaccinated dogs pose no health risk (the humans around you in a restaurant are much more likely to get you sick), many countries still see dogs as persona non grata when it comes to in ..read more

It’s 2019 and Luna the traveling pooch has been traveling the world full-time for almost seven and a half years. This year, she has already conquered three new countries (and is about to add a fourth to the list). And one of those countries? Pretty, bog-dotted, northern, tech-haven Estonia. So, what is it like to travel in Estonia with a small dog? Is it hard to find apartments? Are most places dog-friendly? Can you take your pooch in restaurants? Here’s a breakdown of our experiences… Dog-friendly accommodations We didn’t have any trouble finding housing with a small (5 kg) dog – both in Air ..read more

K9 Sport Sack: My new go-to dog carrier backpack

When you’re adventuring with a dog, honestly, there isn’t much you need. Dogs are, as they say, natural minimalists. Which is why Luna’s travel gear list isn’t a particularly long one. A couple sweaters/shirts. A harness and leash. Some small toys. Medications for emergencies. And paperwork for crossing borders. And, of course, some bags. Because when you’re traveling the world with a small dog, most forms of transit – from trains to planes to cycling – will require some sort of carrier. In which Luna tries watermelon for the first time

Lately, I’ve been soothing my soul with YouTube videos about animals. I’m late to the game, but I discovered that a year or two ago, a bunch of YouTubers made videos of their dogs taste testing different foods. I can’t stop watching them. And so I decided to make one of my own.  Without further ado, here’s Luna’s first foray into the world of watermelon (and also proof of what a messy eater she is).
