Wide open bass drum!

Wanted to try a wide open bass drum tuning on the Rogers 22” bass drum today. I got a couple of rock n roll gigs coming up where I won’t be mic’d so I thought I’d see how this bass drum sounds with a PS3 batter head and an unported Evans hydraulic on the front. For this recording there’s a Shure Beta 52 mic about 3 inches in front of the bass drum and the rest of the kit is covered by a lone AKG C214 overhead. It’s not crazy ringy like Keith Carlocks’ bass drum, but I think I really dig... Read more ..read more

A 22 , 13, 16 Ludwig Classic Oak has come up for sale here . It’s 6 months old , so virtually new. Its price is less than 50% of current retail with a DW heavy duty Tom stand included ie $2900 AUD all up. I don’t need another kit but it’s really tempting! Some online reviews say they are either loud or dead sounding. I know they are the revamped Keystone X , Oak , Maple , Oak. What are the thoughts on the Classic Oak series by Ludwig ..read more

Mapex Mahogany Snares

Was wondering if anyone here has or has hands-on experience with either the Mapex Heartbreaker or the Scorpion. I am looking for a mahogany snare. I don't really want deeper than 6" inches so that cuts out the Gretsch Swamp Dog even though I like what I have seen and heard of that one. Anyone know what Mapex uses for mahogany ..read more

Just FYI I bought a pair of these artist series 15 in hi hats. Liked them so much I bought a 18 crash. The price for both $450. They have some weird tool marks but sound great. I've got paiste gaint beat, istanbul agop, zildjian and Sabian cymbals. The Aisen are credible and have been on the kit for a month. I like them alot ..read more

Decent Hardware Pack?

I am building up a new kit from scratch. The set will live 90% of it's life in my den, so it won't be moved a lot. I started my hunt looking at Ludwig Classic Flat Based hardware. Sweetwater suggested DW 5000. I kind of feel like the 5000 series my be too heavy weight for what I am going to use it for. I play mostly Indie/Alternative rock, but am not a crazy basher with a heavy hand. Do you all have a better suggestion? Also, a good throne ..read more

Cymbal quick release hardware - best?

Getting back playing and it's been so long that this is a new invention as far as I'm concerned. Which one is best, I want one that contains the felt in/on it however that works. The one I used splits on both sides of the post and looks like normal plastic twisty things but it snaps on and off and has the felt built in. I think that's the one I want (the only I've seen) but I can't find it. Recommendations? Thanks ..read more
