From mess to painting Do you recognize that? That you keep messing around and that you wonder whether the painting is going to be something. I have that regularly! Usually a painting gets darker the longer you go on. All colours mix together. Do you tend to stop and throw the painting away? You can … but you don’t have to! The great thing about beeswax is that you can go on endlessly. Painting with wax is a process. We grow through experience. By experimenting. By starting over. By discovering. Make mistakes, fix them. This painting starts with a mess… but then something changes… Enjoy t ..read more

Cycle of Life

An Encaustic tree of life There is growth in the spring. Then there is bloom. When autumn comes, the leaves fall from the tree. The tree stops growing, appears almost dead to wake up in spring and blossom again. A cycle that continues over and over. The roots that are increasingly anchored in the earth. There are times when there is a lot of sadness, loneliness, pain, fear and grief. If we ‘live’ these moments in life, there is room for us to grow, develop and blossom. Then, to let go of everything we no longer need (the autumn releasing its leaves) because it no longer serves us. The cycle ..read more

Why paint with wax?

What’s in a painting. Does it even matter? Why paint? Wax is a fascinating material. At usual ambient temperatures it is a solid. But with a slightly hotter environment it becomes a liquid. It allows change of form very easily. Some changes are simple and controllable, some are less easy to direct or enforce. Colours can combined with the wax itself to create truly wonderful paints. And these fully intermixable paints offer total beginners and fine artists a very similar start. For me, working with wax has a number underlying aspects. A Bigger Story

One painting, different stories A story is sometimes bigger than we can see. We often only see one side of a story and that can have many reasons. Maybe this part of the story interests you. Either you see that part of the story because you can connect to it or it can reflect that part of you. Sometimes a story is only illuminated from one side, but the rest of the story is not visible. And sometimes we just want to highlight the story on one side so we don’t have to see the other part. Which part of a story do you see? Story 1 What do you notice? What does the painting tell you ..read more

Fantasy Figures in a colour TRIAD

Colour choice has a huge impact on the power and mood of your creations. This short blog is continuing with use of figures (from “Figure it out … ” 2 weeks ago). They are still the focal element in the created fantasy scene. But the colour combination is what makes the image work with such visual intensity and dynamic. This colour combination is a triad. A TRIAD is an equally sided triangle within the colour circle. You can rotate that triangle to point at any of the colour combinations. Let’s take a look at the video first – it is accompanied by some music. Such an image is not difficul ..read more
