I have existing outlets under the eaves on two ends of the house, ideal for camera locations. I purchased a LaView "light bulb" camera and paired it up with my phone, and it appears to provide all the functionality I need. I'm not looking for a lot --- just DAYTIME views at each end of the house. But what I really want is to be able to view this video in my home office, on my PC. I've been searching and can't seem to find a solution that I'm capable of implementing. I have set up my own... Read more ..read more

I've purchased such a device for about 110$ : Anjielo 94206-S 10". Immediately upon attempt to connect it's "Tuya" smart software my mobile phone got kicked off home WiFi and multiple reset didn't solve the connection problem. Only hard reset of the doorbell could solve the WiFi connection issue with the mobile. Now I'm afraid of further WiFi fingering with Tuya. Is it safe to use it with smart home appliances at all ..read more

Advice on using old PC as dedicated NAS for security cameras

We got a couple of PoE cameras recently and while it'll be a few weeks before I can run the ethernet cable, I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to set them up. Previously I'd planned to hook these up to my current Unraid server using a docker such as Shinobi, but some videos I've watched have made me rethink that idea, as they mention how hard the cpu can be made to work trying to do stuff it wasn't really designed for - compared to an ASIC or a GPU. The problem in part is that my... Read more ..read more

Separate IOT Network?

I'm a bit uncertain about at this so forgive me if I get the terms wrong. I've been watching youtube, and I'm afraid it has expanded my vocabulary without leaving me with much understanding. I've read that for better security I should have a separate network for My IOT devices. (security cameras, lights, outlets, etc.) I haven't found anything on how I should do that. I currently have a modem with a firewall and router from comcast with one network mask. Then an Asus RT-ax58U connected... Read more ..read more

Pi DHCP server within LAN?

My parents have recently started renting out their garden outhouse on airbnb. I helped run ethernet down the garden and put a Unifi AC-Lite in there to serve wifi. So currently they have my old ASUS AC86U acting as their router, with Ethernet running off that down to the unifi ap in the garden. I have the unifi controller running on a pi that I can access remotely. Ideally I’d like to use Unifi’s built in capabilities for VLAN tagging depending on WLAN SSID, to ensure segregation between... New router, Echos and TCL TV are the only devices that can't connect

So I upgraded last night from an AC86U to an AX86U. I flashed Merlin's firmware, did a hard reset, then started setting everything up manually. I chose a new IP range for the router (10.35.45.1), new SSID, new password, got my main devices set up with static IPs, the whole 9 yards. My only issue is that I can not, for the life of me, get my multiple Echo devices and my TCL TV to connect to the new network. I've reset all of the echos, and even disassociated them from my account. Every... Read more ..read more

DIY POE Camera & Storage or buy prebuilt package?

I am considering setting up some POE Cameras around the exterior of the home to keep an eye on things when out of town. Should I renew my geek status and build my own or just buy an package deal of cameras & storage appliance? Already have a decent Unifi network with spare POE capacity and a NAS with a few TB of storage available. Also I am not wild about putting my stuff on a cloud so the DIY route is preffered. I would most likely port forward the camera feeds like my Jellyfin or maybe... Read more ..read more
