The US aviation group Airlines for America asked the Biden administration to block additional flights to and from China. It says Beijing’s “existing harmful competitive policies” hurt American airlines and workers.  In a letter published on Thursday signed by Airlines for America, “The competitive disadvantage is harmful to the approximately 315,000 workers employed by US passenger airlines that serve China.”  Airlines for America includes American Airlines, Delta, and United, plus unions that represent aviation workers.  It added, “If the growth of the Chinese aviation market i ..read more

United Airlines asked its pilots to take unpaid time off in May because of delays in Boeing’s new planes. Boeing has struggled in the production of its jets due to the additional scrutiny of the Federal Aviation Administration after the Alaska Airlines incident wherein a door panel blew off mid-flight.  A United spokesperson said that the offer to its pilots is voluntary. Alaska Airlines announced on Thursday that Boeing paid them about $160 million as initial compensation for the temporary grounding of 737 Max 9 jets. The $160 million compensation is equivalent to the lost profits for the quarter. The airline also mentioned that it expects additional compensation.  In January, a door panel of a nearly new Alaska Airlines-operated Boeing 737 Max 9 blew out mid-flight. American Airlines is relaxing its pet policy. This new policy allows pet owners to bring their pets alongside a carry-on bag into the cabin.  In the past, pet owners bringing their pets in the cabin not only had to pay a $150 pet fee but also could only have one other small item that could fit under their seat. A United Airlines flight made an emergency landing on Friday due to severe turbulence. The Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner landed at New York Stewart International Airport, with more than 20 passengers reportedly injured.
