Over the weekend we were invited to Steenberg to try the new Al Fresco Boxes from their signature restaurant Tryn. In previous years this wouldn’t be such a big deal, but with Covid and social distancing, all interactions outside of the safe space that is home feel almost “naughty”. Perhaps that’s silly to even say, but we put a lot of thought into all the locations we go to and I was sold on this visit because a) Steenberg MCC is my husband’s fave and b) the Al Fresco boxes get served on the lawn away from people. WIN. We chose a beautiful, slightly blustery day, and with blankets in tow (the ..read more

The WWF Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) programme is a vital part of the food landscape of South Africa as it works towards building knowledge and understanding of the complex task of sustainably sourcing seafood from our surrounding oceans and water sources. Last week, six South African chefs were awarded the WWF-SASSI Trailblazer status for their commitment to the use of sustainable seafood and championing sustainable seafood practices in their restaurants. A week before lockdown, Mr H and I were immersing ourselves in a fantastic food and wine experience at Louisvale, unaware that in just a few days, we would find ourselves house-bound…wine tasting a distant memory. Well, we definitely chose the best way to end our proverbial freedom and the reason I didn’t share our experience sooner was because I was waiting for the restrictions to lift so we could visit again. I’m happy to report now that they are are open again with a new menu and 3 new wines – Louisvale Merlot 2018, Louisvale Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, and the Louisvale Sauvignon Blanc 2020 ..read more

Easy Easter Activities for families

Joy and excitement surrounds the Easter period and whilst, this year, we might not have access to all the consumables that usually go with this holiday period, we can still celebrate family time…and get in some Easter activities. Aside from stuffing my face with Cadbury Mini Eggs, Creme Eggs and the incredibly moreish Cadbury Fluffies, we usually invite some family over, do a big Sunday roast and then I hide some eggs around the garden for the girls to find whilst I pass out with a food baby. Despite it being a little different this year we’re still going to work on keeping some of our traditi ..read more

Easy Chocolate Cookies

With the national lock-down looming for South Africa, don’t forget to add chocolate and baking goods to your grocery list. If you have kids, baking is a fun activity to do together PLUS, chocolate is known for its ability to increase levels of the calming neurotransmitter serotonin. That makes chocolate an essential right now! I love making chocolate chip cookies and this recipe is simple, when adhered to, and doesn’t take long at all. No silly freezing time. No burning butter or using five different types of flour and sugar. Ingredients: 1 cup butter that has been lightly softened 1&nb ..read more

Leopard’s Leap makes family lunches lovely

A few weeks ago we were invited to try the Rotisserie lunch at Leopard’s Leap in Franschhoek and it was just the thing to help us unwind and take time off together as a family. A relaxed dining experience, the traditional harvest spread is available from Wednesday to Sunday and offers you a huge choice of cooked meats and accompanying salads. We’ve been wine tasting at Leopard’s Leap numerous times, and done two of their fantastic wine and food pairing events but this was the first time I really regretted not wearing elastic-waisted trousers because…we ate a lot. And the girls exhausted themse ..read more

Join the Rugani juice revolution

How do you incorporate veggies into your kid’s diet? I don’t how about you, but before having kids I naively thought they would eat anything I placed in front of them. I assumed that by way of a good diet and fresh air that they would be 100% healthy. All the time. Ha. Those good intentions have disappeared in a puff of smoke but it’s okay because I now get to rely on other people doing the hard work for me Imagine you could get the freshest veggies, but in juice form? The clever folks at Rugani offer natural juices and their world-first Rugani extraction process ruptures 95% of veggi ..read more

Family lunch at Perdeberg

Getting out with the kids deserves some form of trophy. I feel really strongly about this, as someone who has had to drag a screaming three year old out of a crowded restaurant and felt the full weight of everyone’s disapproval. I have to really pysch myself up if I want to attempt a family outing and our end location must have something that works for all of us. Perdeberg Winery bravely got in touch to see if they could be the answer for many parents, and they invited us all to come and dine at the restaurant and test how child-friendly the winery was. We naturally obliged and on a hot Saturd ..read more

The Bosch Cooking Experience

Last weekend, I spent the afternoon with some amazing mommy bloggers to experience the cooking courses that the BSH Home Appliances showroom offers. The Bosch Cooking Experiences might have been flying under the radar but it’s time they received some spotlight. Located on New Church street, the Experience Centre allows you to learn more about Bosch, Siemens and Gaggenau through cooking with them. Invited to cook alongside a group of women I follow on Instagram, I loved getting to know people in person (how often do you see people online and don’t get the chance to be with them in real life) an ..read more
