HAPPY MOTHERS DAY
I decided to wear McCalls 6955 for mothers day. It is springy and made for a nice dress to wear.
My best friend made me some jewelry for my birthday. So fun to be able to pair it with this dress.
LINING BELOW:
Altered bodice pattern below.
This is what I removed below
I had a little bubble right above the darts so I brought them up some.
I used bias binding and a rolled hem instead of serging. I must say I like the results better. I like this pattern and will make it again . I was actually surprised by this dress because   ..read more

In honor of MAGAM I decided to make McCalls 5989.
I used a seam press open serge. I normally would serge the seams pressed to one side, but I like the look of the open.
And then the problems came in.I accidentally serged my pant fabric with the seam creating 2 holes. I am still deciding if I am going to keep the pajama pants or not. You win some you lose some. I am happy that I did not make this in the original fabric that I was going to make it in. African print I would have been heartbroken to have to throw it away ..read more

In honor of Magam's October challenge I decided to make Vogue's 8870.
The dress was not hard to make a sewed up rather easily. I did not take time to read the directions so I don't know how well they were written. Is this a beginner friendly dress, I would say yes depending on the fabric you are using.I added a half inch to the bust pattern pieces. Then had to take it in at the waist to fit around the skirt. No other alterations were needed.
Even though it's a cool dress. I would not make this again, the elasticized waist makes me look super top heavy and without a waist belt, I don't ..read more

So, in honor of breast cancer awareness month. I am posting some sites and stats I think are super helpful. As an African American woman I was diagnosed before the age of 35 with no familail genetic connections, while breastfeeding. African American women under the age of 40 have higher rates of breast cancers than peers of other races. Cancer is also being caught in advanced stages for AAW.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths, lung cancer takes the first spot.
1. Remember to do regular breast exams and if you feel anything is off please get it checked out. If your ..read more

For this dress I used a small. It was a fairly easy make. Except for the gathering. Which was difficult for no apparent reason. I gathered the bottom of this dress about 5 times. I'm not sure what was going on but it was not coming out to my liking. Usually gathering goes pretty smoothly. It was so frustrating with such an easy make. Finally the gathering gods bestowed their favor upon me and let me get a nice gathering at the bottom. I also changed the sleeves. Instead of the fluttery sleeves I added elastic to the bottom. I really like how it came out. The best part about this dress ..read more

Lets have a chat about African Print. I really love the fabric and am interested in the continent as a whole. I use this fabric a lot. Authentic African print is 100% cotton but due to its expensive price, knock-offs have been made that are normally 100% polyester. So be sure to read the fabric content as most African print sold in the states is the polyester variety. The polyester variety is used if not more often than the cotton due to its pricing. Vlisco is a well known company that sells African prints. I have recently read that they are trying to partner more with African designers ..read more
