We’re really sorry to announce that Crumbs magazine is being suspended for the foreseeable future from today. Our glorious, wonderful Crumbs #100 issue published and distributed last week is our swansong for now. We step away for now with our heads held high. We thank all our readers and advertisers for their support over many years and all our issues to date. We’ve absolutely loved publishing Crumbs. This is a very sad day. We have taken the decision to suspend the magazine in light of the current COVID-19 outbreak and exceptionally difficult trading conditions in the se ..read more

New openings: Osip and Number One Bruton

You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone. Or ’til it changes into a fresh new outfit and presents itself to you looking all sexy and new again. My point: if the South West ever loses its dazzle, don’t relocate right away – rather, eat at Osip. That’ll buff the shine back into this glorious patch of the country for you. Merlin Labron Johnson deploys the local bounty here with all the enthusiasm of a food obsessive newly surrounded by farmland. It’s a novelty for the Devon native, who’s come from London, where he launched three restaurants and earned a Michelin star in the process. In 2019 ..read more

If there’s one cookery show chefs tune into on their days off, we reckon it must be Great British Menu. Back for its 15th series as of this Wednesday 18 March, the televised cookery competition sees chefs from across the country go head to head for the chance to win a coveted spot cooking at the very-big-deal, end-of-season banquet. There will be some familiar faces popping up in the kitchen this series, too. First to appear, in episode one, will be Whatley Manor‘s two-Michelin-starred Niall Keating, while Gordon Jones, from his eponymous Bath restaurant Menu Gordon Jones, will follow later i ..read more

If you’ve had a good nosey around the Bristol and Bath Rum Distillery on Park Street you’ll have noticed that, as well as a sizable still, there’s an intriguing laboratory set-up upstairs – complete with comfy stools and the promise of cocktails.  This, friends, is Rum School. Sessions see explorations into the world of rum, it’s history and the processes that make it. Then there’s the opportunity to make your very own bottle of the stuff.  Yep, using a base spirit and a huge selection of botanicals and ingredients, you’re able to create your very own spiced rum blend. Bristol folk looking for their next coffee fix will soon have another indie café to choose from with the opening of C.U.P. Speciality Coffee and Tea on Park Street later this month. C.U.P. will be serving food in the form of pastries, sandwiches, cakes and home-baked traditional Greek pies, but the emphasis is very much on the hot brews. “We believe that coffee is an everyday need but also an affordable luxury, and this is how we treat it,” says Maria Fyssaki, co-owner of C.U.P. “We have passionate and knowledgeable baristas whose attention to detail and persistence ensures the best brew ever ..read more

New bar set to launch in Bristol rail arch

The West Country is the home of proper English cider, so it’s only fitting that this staple sit should be properly celebrated in the region’s urban centre. The Cider Box will open its doors in St Philips, Bristol, later this month in a Victorian rail arch. Producing its own craft drinks, it’ll give visitors the chance to see their favourite apple-based bev being pressed, fermented and blended, as well as test out the results in the taproom. The venue will feature a community apple press, cider blending collabs, demos, live music and, of course, taps pouring the freshest cider in town, matured ..read more

Japanese joints: Budo Ba
Crumbs Magazine | A little slice of foodie heaven in Bath, Bristol & Devon
by Charlie Lyon

There are curtains hung in doorways in traditional Japanese premises that act as dividers. They’re called noren, and were used to help cool homes, shops and bars in summer, while keeping them warm in winter.  They act as a kind of salutation to visitors and can vary in length, from short, head-height pieces of cloth to floor-length curtains.  Protocol says you should breeze right through them, pushing apart the panels confidently – not act like a complete uncultured berk as I do on my first visit to Budo Ba, ducking low under them, lurching forward and stumbling into the bar, provid ..read more
