The fall from the Premier League all the way to League One is a hard, painful one to endure, as Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town learned this week.
Both clubs were relegated from the Championship to the third tier on Saturday, but it wasn’t so long ago that they were gracing the top flight with their presence.
The 13 years since the Blues were last in the Premier League (and winning the League Cup) have flown by, while the Terriers were there as recently as 2019.
They join a rather lengthy list of clubs who have dropped down the divisions over the past 32 years (yes, we do r ..read more

We are all enjoying one of the most engaging and entertaining Premier League seasons in recent memory, despite the fact it contains arguably the worst bottom three we’ve ever seen.
Burnley and Sheffield United have been abysmal, and although Luton Town have been interesting to follow, they don’t possess a whole lot of quality.
The Hatters have earned a lot of praise for their fighting spirit, pulling out big wins against Newcastle and Brighton as well as drawing with Liverpool – but they’ve also lost 19 matches so far.
These three sides have amassed a combined total of just 59 points so far t ..read more

The new England kit has, regrettably, been front and centre of the interminable culture war this week.
Political leaders, pundits, keyboard warriors and columnists who haven’t written an original thought in years have all waded in, offering their tuppence on this confected quarrel.
Nike, you see, had the temerity to alter the St. George’s cross and stick it on the collar of the new jersey. It was, in their words, a “playful update” to “unite and inspire”, but judging by the reaction on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, not in the way they hoped.

Our FA Cup awards honour the best – and worst – of the fourth round action from the weekend.
Moment of the Week
The best tie of the weekend came at The Racecourse Ground, as Wrexham’s Hollywood owners were given another epic episode for their docu-series on the club.
Ryan Reynolds was in attendance as Wrexham continued their FA Cup campaign against Sheffield United, in search of a second successive Championship upset.
It was a game that had it all as the two teams played out a six-goal thriller, with twists and turns, a red card, and a stoppage-time equaliser that saw the visiting Blades esca ..read more

Manchester United are into the fifth round of the FA Cup after they secured a comfortable 3-1 win over Reading tonight.
Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils dominated possession right from the off, with Paul Ince’s Reading happy to sit deep and take their chances on the break.
Reading’s well-drilled five-man defence proved to be challenging to break down, with a couple of Bruno Fernandes half-chances the nearest the home side came to opening the deadlock.
On 35 minutes Marcus Rashford thought his back post header had made him the first-ever Man United player to score in ten successive games at Old Traff ..read more

Erik ten Hag has called on Manchester United to ‘be on the front foot’ as the club face Reading in the FA Cup fourth round this weekend.
United continue their cup campaign against Reading at Old Trafford tomorrow evening, with the Red Devils continuing to compete on four fronts this season.
Ten Hag’s team took a step closer to the Carabao Cup final with a 3-0 first leg win at Nottingham Forest in their semi-final in midweek and the Dutchman wants his team to continue their momentum tomorrow. United have won eight of their last ten games in all competitions.

Our FA Cup awards honour the best – and worst – of the competition’s third round action.
Moment of the Week
Kidderminster Harriers continued their run in this season’s competition after causing another upset to reach round four, the lowest-ranked side still in the FA Cup beating Championship side Reading.
Russell Penn’s side came from behind to seal a famous win at a packed Aggborough Stadium, with the second-tier visitors – in particular goalkeeper Rafael Cabral – unnerved by a spirited Kiddy side.
Rafael endured a nightmare afternoon as two mistakes contributed to his side’s shock exit, fir ..read more

Selecting a festive-sounding Premier League XI is easy, then it quickly becomes hard, as the obvious choices dry up and you resort to puns. That’s a roundabout way of saying there are a couple of players included that may require a leap of faith.
As for picking a balanced side, forget about it. Our team contains no goalkeeper, precisely no defenders and there is barely a midfielder to be seen. The six-yard box will be as crowded as an under-10s game from a corner.
So, goals are a given while at the back, our Christmas eleven will concede and often, but maybe that’s okay. After al ..read more
