Yep. anyone who think science is dry and boring does not understand or know how science works. A quote I like: "The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not ‘Eureka!’ (I found it!) but ‘That’s funny …’ " –Isaac Asimov ..read more

More of an “all too infrequent visitor,” really. Per these many years of P-netting, my paddling associations widened my horizons, especially due to that once glorious October Mosh-pit of Camping-Canoeing-Carousing Machinations, The Lake Raystown Rendezvous. Those halcyon days, wherein Hieronymus Bosch’s Trippy Tych, The Aquatic Garden of Mirthly Delights and Tumblehome, may well have have been inspired to canvas (should he have lived so long and felt so brazen, with supplemental readings of John Barth’s The Floating Opera serving our Hiero as further inspiration), still find me occasionally in ..read more

I thought you would like it. Ditto, I was impressed with her writing and approach to the science. She has a good grasp of the history of the science she is reporting on and the personalities and process involved in the science. This gives depth to the understanding of how we get to the present work being done. It is certainly not dry science ..read more

Suggestions solo from SUP to canoe

I’m a huge fan of traditional solo canoes, so consider me biased. When you said that canoe seats irritate you whether sitting or kneeling, here’s the question that comes to my mind. Have you ever paddled a canoe from a kneeling position, where the seat is actually set up for kneeling? I ask that question because if you can kneel and be comfortable on a SUP, you surely can be even more comfortable doing so in a canoe that’s properly set up for that. The problem most people have when considering the suitability of a solo canoe is that they have never seen one up close and have no options to try ..read more

Upper Michigan: This weekend

Driving north on I-75 in Michigan there is a sudden change from the rich flat farmland into forested hills and moraines before West Branch. Up 127 the change is somewhere near Clare. The line is clearly visible on satellite views too. https://www.google.com/maps/@44.1096866,-85.0732275,594605m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu To me that is the border of “up north”, where you find famous paddling rivers like the Au Sable, Pine, and Pere Marquette. To me the Adirondacks had even more of an up north vibe than northern Michigan. But Cincinnatti’s version of “up north” is down in Kentucky ..read more

Thanks for the suggestion, Willowleaf. I’ll try that website. However, the problem I’m having is not finding potential outfitters, but finding one that rents proper seakayaks. All the outfitters near Windermere Lake I’ve contacted to date only rent sit-on-tops ..read more
