New York to West Virginia and south to Florida and Alabama. Found on edges of streams or damp woods in sandy soil, in dappled sunlight, in wet depressions.
General Information

General Information About Yellowwood
This is one of the rarest of our native trees. They tend to be wide-crowned and their bark is gray and smooth. The leaves are a beautiful golden tone in fall. The name ‘yellowwood’ refers to the color of the heartwood of this tree. At one time, freshly cut heartwood was used as a dye for clothing.

Native Azaleas
Native azaleas..lovely, deciduous rhododendrons best suited for shaded or partly sunny gardens with acidic, consistently moist but well drained soil (they don’t tend to like wet feet). They do not tolerate heavy clay or alkaline soils. Though in nature many species are found near streams, ponds, fens, and bogs, do not be fooled into thinking that they can tolerate heavy, wet soils. We are at a critical point of losing so many species from local ecosystems that their ability to produce the oxygen, clean water, flood control, pollination, pest control, carbon storage, etc, that is, the ecosystem services that sustain us, will become seriously compromised.

Dormant gardens provide enormous ecological benefit. ‘Hidden’ in this photo collage of dormant gardens are some important beneficial insects. Would you be able to spot these as you clear ‘debris’ away from your garden? Let them stay until temperatures are at least consistently above 50 degrees.
How Long Should You Delay Garden Clean Up?
