Royals Farm Report

We are just one day away from pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training and we cannot be more excited to get back into the swing of things as we approach opening day real soon against the Minnesota Twins later in March.  As the guys head down to Scottsdale, Arizona to prep for their first Spring Training game in a couple of weeks, we look forward to seeing what is in store for the Kansas City Royals, especially with the new addition of Adam Frazier and the long-term extension the Royals just gave to Bobby Witt Jr.  Hoping our farm system has a lot to ..read more

At a minimum, the Royals are sending a message
Royals Farm Report

For years, the Kansas City Royals have operated with far too much patience and blind faith in their homegrown “talent.” After a rough 2021 campaign, Brady Singer was brilliant in 2022, but then was pretty bad again in 2023, but the Royals rode him for 29 starts and his spot in the rotation never appeared to be remotely in jeopardy. In 2022, Daniel Lynch made 27 starts with an ERA over 5.00 and appeared to be locked into a rotation spot in 2023 before an injury ended his season. The same could be said for Kris Bubic after his 27 start, 5.58 ERA season in 2022, though he seemed to have turned a ..read more

The high octane arms of NWA
Royals Farm Report

The Northwest Arkasnas Naturals bullpen is full of high octane arms. That is, guys who throw gas. At the beginning of the season if you mentioned gas in the Naturals pen, it was without question referencing RHP Will Klein. Klein and his triple digit heat moved to Omaha and then represented the Royals at the 2023 Futures Game in Seattle. Currently, if you mention the gas in the Naturals bullpen, the question has to be which one? The Naturals pen is now full of guys who are described as “hard-throwers”. A lot of these guys were flyers who have found their way to AA in a roundabout way. Many time ..read more

RFR’s 2023 Midseason Top-50 Royals Prospect Rankings
Royals Farm Report
by Alex Duvall
10M ago
Hello and welcome. The 2023 MLB Draft has come to a close and we can finally evaluate an entirely new Royals system with an entirely new prospect ranking. Since we last ranked the system this preseason, Maikel Garcia has graduated and made it pretty clear that I had him too low at #2. Drew Waters has also graduated and looks like having him at #6 was an appropriate place for him. Asa Lacy still has not thrown a competitive pitch this season. Samad Taylor has graduated from our list and may have justified his ranking at #23 though the jury is still out on him. Junior Marin was traded to Philly ..read more

10 things that need to happen in the second half
Royals Farm Report
by Alex Duvall

Don’t have time for a lot of explaining, but obviously the first half was so awful that things have to change in the second half. Here are 10 things that I think have got to happen for KC in the second half of the season if we’re supposed to feel better about the future of the club heading into 2024. #1: Scott Barlow, Edward Olivares, Matt Duffy, and one more veteran have to go This is pretty self-explanatory, I think. Relievers are ticking time bombs on bad ball clubs and the Royals are a bad ball club. Edward Olivares is a good bat but he’s such an awful defender that you can’t really expect ..read more

2023 MLB Draft Cheat Sheet

Alrighty. As I have mentioned several times before, I just don’t have time for the usual draft coverage you may be used to. I apologize in advance for that. Hopefully next summer I’ll have a little bit more time to dive into it. With that being said, I am usually pretty willing to let y’all hold my feet to the fire with my takes and predictions. I’m going to ask for a little grace this year. I feel like I have been pretty transparent through the years when new information is presented to me and I change an opinion. That may happen a lot between now and the draft. I have been gung ho about Matt ..read more

Following up on 10 breakout candidates: Part 2
Royals Farm Report

Alex wrote an article back in early February about 10 guys who could have a breakout season. He excluded RFR’s top 14 prospects to force us to dig a little deeper. Let’s follow up on that and see how guys 7 8, and 9 are doing on the first day of summer. Number 10 was LHP TJ Sikkema. I covered TJ Sikkema here. I covered 7, 8, and 9 here. So let’s move on to #6, OF Darryl Collins from the Netherlands. Collins was hitting .244/.322/.308 in Quad Cities before diving and hurting his shoulder on June 1. Since then he has been moved to the 60-day injured list. Collins was playing LF and dov ..read more

Let’s follow up on that and see how guys 7 8, and 9 are doing on the first day of summer. Number 10 was LHP TJ Sikkema. I covered TJ Sikkema here. Number 9 was SS Daniel Vazquez. Vazquez was a big money international free agent signing a few years ago. He was considered a glove first guy and Baseball America listed him as the Royals #12 prospect when they put out their mid-season lists. Vazquez is having an okay season for a 19 ..read more
