It was on this day in 1992 that a seventeen-year-old called David Beckham made his Manchester United debut, in a League Cup tie away to Brighton & Hove Albion. Becks came on as a substitute for Andrei Kanchelskis in the 72nd minute. A chorus of “Who the f*****g hell are you?” echoed around the Goldstone Ground as he went onto the pitch. No one knew him then, but the whole world would in the next few years! David Beckham is now one of the most recognisable faces on the planet, thanks to his football career and his celebrity lifestyle because of his marriage to former Spice Girl Victor ..read more

It was on this day in 1973 that Brian Clough’s Brighton and Hove Albion side lost 8-2 at home to Bristol Rovers. The ITV cameras went down to the Goldstone Ground to film the match and the 8-2 hammering was broadcast to the nation. Not the greatest of starts for Clough! Clough and his assistant Peter Taylor resigned from Derby County on 15th October 1973 and had shocked the footballing world by joining Third Division side Brighton and Hove Albion less than three weeks later. Their new charges drew three and won one of their first four matches with Clough at the helm before drawing non-league ..read more

Michael Robinson with team-mate Bruce Grobbelaar after the 1984 European Cup win Former Liverpool, Brighton and Hove Albion and Osasuna Michael Robinson died today at the age of 61. Robinson probably became more famous after his playing career, having spent 30 years in a variety of roles on Spanish television. It was at Second Division Preston North End where Robinson started his career. After four years at Deepdale, Malcolm Allison came in and signed him for Manchester City for £750,000. This was a large transfer fee at the time and considered an extravagance for a player of Robinson’s age an ..read more

The club were in the Third Division at the time and he took over just before the start of the 1976/77 season. This season’s home shirt Good – Home shirt 2019/20 I have searched through the various kits that Brighton have worn over the years and this season’s home shirt is my favourite. The design is quite straightforward with vertical blue and white stripes on the body and blue sleeves. Nike made the shirt and their logo is on the right hand side of the shirt in gold. The main sponsor of the kit (and Brighton’s stadium as well!) ‘American Express’ is emblazoned horizontally in blue lettering on a white strip. Brighton and Notts County walk out onto the pitch before the 1991 Play Off Final Bad – Away s ..read more

“And Smith must score………” Gordon Smith lines up to shoot in the last few seconds of the 1983 FA Cup Final Brighton fans look away now!  This iconic moment in football comes from the 1983 FA Cup Final between Brighton and Hove Albion and Manchester United. With the score tied at 2-2, Brighton’s Gordon Smith suddenly finds himself in space in the Manchester United penalty area with only United’s goalkeeper Gary Bailey to beat. Smith’s strike partner Michael Robinson had laid the ball off to him from his left and he had enough time to control the ball, look up and decide where to put the ..read more
