In one of the more unfortunate and unusual losses of the season, the Indians fell to the San Francisco Giants, 1-0, as the lone run of the game is balked in by Cleveland reliever Tony Sipp with the bases loaded in the seventh inning. The inning started with Justin Masterson on the mound for the Indians. Nate Schierholtz got the fourth hit of the game off of the Indians ace, but was thrown out trying to stretch his double into a triple. Miguel Tejada reached on a throwing error, but a weak popup to short by Chris Stewart put two outs on the board. A botched forceout attempt on a ground ball fro ..read more

Less than three years after signing with the club, 21-year-old right-hander Jaret Wright makes his Major League debut in front of a packed Jacobs Field crowd and earns a 10-5 win over the Minnesota Twins. Wright, son of former Major League pitcher Clyde Wright, pitched five and two-thirds innings and had some problems on the mound, but he got that first MLB win under his belt in his first try. He allowed five runs on seven hits, walked three, and struck out four. Three balls left the yard, as Ron Coomer, Marty Cordova, and Scott Stahoviak all took him deep. The first two shots were back-to-bac ..read more

For the sixth time this season, Luis Tiant throws a complete game shutout as he and his Cleveland teammates blank the Detroit Tigers, 3-0. The outing by “El Tiante” continued an impressive 13-game stretch for the fifth-year Indians starter. He threw four consecutive shutouts from April 28th to May 12th and had another one on June 9th against the same Tigers before shutting them out on just three hits in game one of a doubleheader in Cleveland. He was credited with eleven complete games during this stretch with 102 strikeouts in 111 innings and a 0.89 ERA while earning a 10-3 record. The Indian ..read more

The Cleveland Indians acquire the highly controversial John Rocker from the Atlanta Braves with a minor leaguer for relievers Steve Karsay and Steve Reed. Just a few years after becoming a household name across the country for all of the wrong reasons, Rocker was given a fresh start in Cleveland after proving to be a reliable closer for the Atlanta Braves for several seasons. He would save four games in Cleveland in 38 appearances while going 3-7 with a 5.45 ERA and was dealt to the Texas Rangers following the season for reliever Dave Elder. Troy Cameron, a minor league third baseman also acqu ..read more

The depleted Cleveland starting rotation took another hit on Monday, but the Indians bullpen picked up the slack to complete a six-hit 4-0 shutout of the Chicago Cubs in the first of two from Wrigley Field. The latest in the growing list of walking wounded for the Tribe is Aaron Civale, who exited in the middle of an at bat in the fifth inning on Monday night. The last man standing in the starting rotation left with what was described as a right middle finger injury, but four relievers handled the rest of the load to protect a three-run lead to get the team back to ten games over the .500 mark ..read more

The “Red Baron”, Rick Sutcliffe, is born in Independence, Missouri. A first round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1974, he debuted just two seasons later at the end of the 1976 campaign. He would not return to the Majors again until 1978, making two relief appearances. He became a regular member of the Dodgers pitching staff in 1979, when he went 17-10 with a 3.46 ERA and won the National League Rookie of the Year award. After working primarily in relief in the next two years, he was dealt to Cleveland on December 9, 1981, with Jack Perconte for Jack Fimple, Jorge Orta, and Larry White. Wit ..read more

Cleveland gets an impressive day at the plate from second baseman Bobby Avila as the Indians knock off the Boston Red Sox, 14-8. Avila was the star of the day, establishing a new team record with 15 total bases in the contest. He wasted no time getting his day started at the plate, as he homered off of Bill Wight as the second batter of the game and to start the scoring in a six-run first inning, one that he later ended with a pop up to second. He singled in the fourth and doubled and scored in the sixth to make it a 9-6 lead. He hit a two-out, two-run homer off of Ellis Kinder in the top of t ..read more

First baseman George Burns goes a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate, hitting two singles, three doubles, and a triple while driving in a pair, as the Cleveland Indians pummel the first place Detroit Tigers, 16-5, in the first game of a doubleheader. Batting fifth in the lineup, Burns was one of several Indians to put up big days at the plate, but his was the most impressive of the starting nine. Eight of nine starters registered at least one hit and Rube Lutzke had a pair replacing Chick Fewster at second after one at bat. Left fielder Charlie Jamieson had three hits, including a pair of triples, a ..read more

Future Indians catcher and coach Sandy Alomar, Jr. is born in Salinas, Puerto Rico. The son of Sandy Alomar, Sr., a 15-year Major Leaguer and longtime coach, both Sandy and his brother Roberto would reach the professional game as members of the San Diego Padres. Roberto, the younger of the two, would reach first in April of 1988, but Sandy would play one game in September and another seven the next season, due to a much bigger hurdle to clear on the roster in All-Star catcher Benito Santiago. With that as a big obstacle, the 1988 and 1989 Pacific Coast League MVP was dealt to the Indians follo ..read more

The Cleveland bats backed six different pitchers with four home runs as the Indians swept the Baltimore Orioles behind a 10-3 final from Progressive Field on Thursday afternoon. With the bullpen expecting to do some heavy lifting with young right-hander Eli Morgan making his second big league start, the bats came to the rescue to provide the entire pitching staff with some wiggle room. Jose Ramirez had a big day, driving home three runs, but Yu Chang made an even bigger contribution out of the eight-hole, driving in a career-high four runs on a pair of two-RBI knocks to help guide the Indians ..read more
