Five things we learned from the Premier League weekend, featuring Arsenal and Man City’s battle for the title, the top four ‘race’, and the player Gareth Southgate should consider including in his Euro 2024 squad.  Title race chugs along towards inevitable conclusion We are at the stage of the season where the Premier League title will be decided by whoever blinks first – but it very much feels like neither Arsenal nor Manchester City are going to do so before the final day. The Gunners were dominant in their 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, and could have won by a bigger scoreline ..read more

Six talking points ahead of the Premier League weekend, featuring huge games in the relegation battle and an Eagles midfielder for England? Can Luton up the pressure on their relegation rivals? Luton face Everton in Friday night football with the Hatters having the chance to up the ante in the relegation battle. A win would lift Rob Edwards’ side out of the bottom three, temporarily at least, and pile the pressure on Nottingham Forest and Burnley. Luton’s fight to survive has stalled of late with just one win since January and a run of three consecutive defeats, though Edwards will hope his s ..read more

The Premier League clubs who survived relegation with the fewest points

They say 40 points is the magic number a Premier League team needs to reach if it is to avoid relegation. While that is usually true, it’s not a given. Since switching to 20 teams in 1995, the top flight has seen three teams relegated on 40 points or more: Sunderland in 1997, Bolton Wanderers in 1998, and West Ham United, who went down with 42 points in 2003. So this figure will more often than not be enough for clubs seeking to avoid the drop, but often that much is not even needed to stay up. In 19 of the last 27 seasons, the 17th-placed team survived on less than 40 points, in some cases a ..read more

Five things we learned from the Premier League weekend, featuring ‘entertaining’ Manchester United and Arsenal’s in-form enigma. Ten Hag is right, Manchester United are entertaining but not how he would like “We are one of the most dynamic and entertaining teams in the league at this moment. We are creating loads of chances by playing good football,” Erik ten Hag said after his Manchester United side drew at home to relegation-threatened Burnley. Zeki Amdouni’s late penalty, following some inexplicable defending, earned Burnley a point and extended United’s run to one win in six games. Their ..read more

Our weekly Premier League awards honour the best – and worst – of the football action from the weekend. Moment of the Week The North London derby always delivers, doesn’t it? Tottenham were on the wrong side of the fine margins against Arsenal, as Ange Postecoglou’s side fell to a 3-2 defeat. Spurs trailed 3-0 to Arsenal at half-time, in a home derby, for the first time in the Premier League era, though it could have been so different. After Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s own goal handed Arsenal the lead, Spurs hit the post through Cristian Romero, before Micky van de Ven had the ball in the net. Di ..read more

Man United manager Erik ten Hag insists that his team are among “the most dynamic and entertaining” sides in the Premier League at the moment.  The Red Devils were held by Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday after Zeki Amdouni scored from the penalty spot late on to cancel out Antony’s opener. Ten Hag felt Man United were the better side over the course of the game, but admitted they threw away the opportunity to get a second win on the bounce.   “We put ourselves in a winning position and over long courses of the game we dominated,” he told BBC Match of the Day. “Only the second pa ..read more

Erik ten Hag was left “very frustrated” after Man United failed to hold onto their lead against Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday.  Antony broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, capitalising on a poor pass from Sander Berge to intercept the ball and score. The hosts gave away a penalty though, after goalkeeper Andre Onana struck Zeki Amdouni with his arm while jumping for the ball.   The Swiss international duly converted from the spot for the equaliser with three minutes of normal time remaining, giving the Clarets a much needed point in the Premier League relegation battle. “Str ..read more

Six talking points ahead of the Premier League weekend, featuring Liverpool’s need to toughen up, Phil Foden’s fantastic form, and an acid test for Arsenal. Limp Liverpool must toughen up against Hammers Liverpool’s title hopes appear all but over after a crushing defeat in the Merseyside Derby in midweek, a second loss in three league games leaving the Reds down if not quite out. Their defeat at Everton was very unlike the Liverpool we have come to know under Jurgen Klopp. His side were outworked, outfought, and the Reds were rattled at set-pieces.
