Something something to lose 9-0 once is misfortune, to do it twice is careless… Manchester United crushed nine-man Southampton 9-0 on Tuesday evening at Old Trafford. The scoreline tied the biggest margin of victory in a Premier League match – which also saw the Saints lose 9-0, at home to Leicester in 2019. Southampton had 19-year-old Swiss midfielder Alexandre Jankewitz sent off after 82 seconds for an idiotic tackle on Scott McTominay – given that Jankewitz’s agent has been mouthing off lately, don’t be surprised if that was the teenager’s last action in a Saints shirt. Southampton’s Che Adams watches his volley find the target Southampton’s 2-0 win against Newcastle United sent them to the top of the Premier League, above Liverpool et al. The last time Saints led the English top flight was in 1988, so it’s kind of a big deal, even if it doesn’t last long. How to commemorate this moment with a timely tweet? The club’s official Twitter account hit the bullseye: STOP THE COUNT pic.twitter.com/rS94knWEhO — Southampton FC (@SouthamptonFC) November 6, 2020 Well done to manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, whose stock continues to rise. Five new Premier League kits spoiled by sponsor logos

It goes without saying that pretty much every football kit in the modern era looks better without a sponsor’s logo, but some clubs really get shafted in that department… Southampton away – An Under Armour shirt messed about by a hideously cheap-looking LD Sports logo. Even the club logo looks out of place. Shame, as the blue-and-yellow colour scheme is classy. Everton home – Hummel can do little wrong in Pies’ eyes, and their new Everton home shirt is no exception. Imagine how much better it would look without the logo of a used car company on the chest. Newcastle Utd home – FUN88!!! Text ..read more

Liverpool have formally apologised to Southampton after making what was described as an ‘illegal approach’ to sign Virgil van Dijk. The Saints lodged a formal complaint with the Premier League earlier in the week after learning that Liverpool had contacted Van Dijk through the back channels – ‘tapping up’, as it used to be called in the trade. The Reds have since issued a statement via their club site apologising to Southampton directly while also confirming that they are hereby nipping their pursuit of the Dutch centre-half in the bud. The statement reads thus: Liverpool would li ..read more

With news of a £50million transfer in the offing, Southampton are prepared to report Liverpool over an ‘illegal approach’ made in their attempts to lure Virgil van Dijk to Anfield this summer. While the 25-year-old Dutch defender is said to be “keen” to join Jurgen Klopp’s side in a club-record move, Southampton are doing their utmost to prevent him leaving. According to BBC Radio Solent, the Saints are livid that Liverpool made contact with Van Dijk to discuss preliminary terms without their permission to do so. What’s more, the Press Association are reporting that the Premier Lea ..read more

Embed from Getty Images Manchester United produced a dull and toothless display away to Southampton on Wednesday night, registering their 15th draw of the league season, their most ever in a Premier League campaign. Embed from Getty Images Sergio Romero, in for David De Gea, was the star of the show for United, and was called into action within the first five minutes after Eric Bailly was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box. However, Romero produced a fine save to thwart Manolo Gabbiadini’s penalty kick. Bailly himself then forced Saints ‘keeper Fraser Forst ..read more

Embed from Getty Images James Milner fluffed his lines from the penalty spot as Liverpool failed to solidify their Champions League hopes against Southampton on Sunday, with the game ending goalless. Overall, the clash was a turgid affair, with Liverpool rarely threatening Saints’ goal. Embed from Getty Images However, on 66 minutes, the hosts had a gilt-edged chance to take the lead, after Jack Stephens handled the ball in the Southampton box. Milner, a spot-kick specialist, stepped up to the take the resulting penalty, only to see his effort saved by Frasier Forster. Liverpool sub Mar ..read more

Embed from Getty Images Chelsea produced an impressive display at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, running out 4-2 winners against Southampton and restoring their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points. With Tottenham breathing down their necks, the Blues needed a good display against Saints and the hosts got off to the perfect start, with Eden Hazard opening the scoring on five minutes from a Diego Costa pass. However, Chelsea suffered a scare on 24 minutes when former Blue Oriol Romeu netted from close-range. Just before the break, the hosts regained the lead, with Gary ..read more

Tottenham like the look of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Jose Mourinho wants to add more bite to Tottenham’s midfield this summer and he’s identified Southampton firebrand Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as the man for the job. This is an annoying rumour, if only because Hojbjerg is a bloody nightmare to spell. Even if I tell myself again and again that there’s a ‘jbj’ sequence in the middle of his name, next time up I’ll still go for Hjoberg, or Hjobjerg, or Hojberg. The Dane (that’s easier) made it clear recently that he’d like to play for a more Champions League-y type of club, and so he has not committed to signing a new deal. Saints manager Ralf Hasenh ..read more
